Bat House question

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone on here from the Houston area or East Texas has ever installed a Bat House and if you have had any luck. I have always enjoyed Bats and would love to put one up for some of the critters but would like to know if anyone around here has had any muck first.

Thanks so much,
Brandon Sivek

i have a friend in west Texas that had several Bat houses that were in constant use. I keep thing I will build some myself but something always eats my time up and I never get around to it.

lol - Around here we just build an interstate bridge and they come...

I haven't ever had a bat house, but people tell me that the location is super important, as well as the spacing of the house iteself. The mother bat wants a place where the babies can stay good and warm, and also close to a water source.

I've been a member of the Bat Conservation Society for years and have the book / plans for building the houses, but DW does not want them anywhere near the house.

Bought a bird bath and that attracts so many birds that the insect population has been affected - not as much as the bats would do, but better that it used to be.

I wanted a bat house too, but when I realized how high up it would need to be and other location conitions, I couldn't figure out where to put it. If you do put one up, please let us know if you get bats to make it home.

Thanks for all the responses yall. I am going to be building one this weekend. Yeah, the location is very important I have heard. In the back corner of the backyard, we have a telephone pole that is pretty high and away from the houses. Do yall think that would be a good spot? There will also be a flower bed under it so that no one can walk under it and disturb them. Also, to anyone that has had experience, what is a good way to get your Bat House out on the market for them? I have seen scents that are supposed to lure them to the house sold online but I wanted to hear from some of yall first.

Thanks so much again,

Brandon, if you look at this site by the Bat Conservency, they give you plans on how to build one, where it should be located, etc. It's a great site and I think you can find everything you need there.
