This morning our dog was barking and barking so my husband finally went out to see what she was so upset about. Under his truck he found this little dog. She looks like a Dachshund and is very sweet. I think she is fairly young. My daughter weighed her and she weighs about 8 pounds. Her ears arn't very long yet either.
Just wondering if anyone knows how old she may look and if the weight tells approx age.
I'm not sure if someone lost her or dumped her. Unfortunately people dump dogs here all the time, rural area, lots of woods. We will hang onto her and see if anyone posts a lost dog sign.
Does anyone here know anything about Dachshunds?
Cute dog! Does she still have baby teeth? We get people dump dogs here too but usually not small dogs. I would put up some 'found' signs and if no answer I would assume she was dumped. Ive contacted rescue groups with limited success, Ive had more luck finding strays a home by placing a free for all add in our local paper.
That is if you don't give her a home first ;)
I am friends with people that run a Dachshunds rescue group that's very good if you decide you don't wish to keep her. I'm not sure that weight tells age so much.. teeth do very well tho. Just be careful of her long back if you don't support her well when you hold her accidental damage can be done to the spine. My best guess on the doxies I know would be about 4 to 6 months. Its hard to tell with the picture. BUT she does not look like a full blood doxies to me. She looks like a dachshund/min pin(or Chihuahua) cross to me. She has the shorter ears like my little one does & she's crossed. Dmail me if you want the rescue group's info. They are good. its where I got my little one from. She's a chihuahua/doxie cross. (heavy on the doxie in her) Have fun & enjoy your new friend! They are the sweetest things.
I grew up with two doxies, Heide and Puc. That little guy looks adorable!
Yes, he should probably have longer ears and not such a pronouced slope from top of head to nose. But who cares?!? I remember mine as being sweet, fun, and cuddly. Lots of energy. Running up and down stairs and sitting up and begging is hard on their backs and I remember our vet discouraging that. They are hounds (just try to talk them out of it!) and they will try to hunt so they should have a fenced yard. Ours got on very well with all other dogs.
Oh, I found a link with any info you might want. http://www.akc.org/breeds/dachshund/
The smooth hair pictured really is what Heide and Puc looked like but they had a bit longer legs. Back in the 50's-60's their legs were a bit longer. The style has changed and the legs are shorter now. Same with the Corgis. I wish breeders, etc. didn't do that! I liked them better with the longer legs!

Oh if I was closer I would be right down... I raised one for 7 years and she was the love of my life.. She went everywhere with me, always right next to me.. wonderful company for me and Billy.... She is in heaven now, but never forgotten..
My best guess is that is a puppy, about four - five months old. Certainly not purebred, she would have a much sharper snout if she were pure. She is so darn cute, and it frustrates me to think people can just drop them off. She has an adorable look about her. I agree with miss J. If I were there I'd take her home in a heartbeat...Hay.
Do these breeds of dogs have such big nipples? I don't recall seeing that on any of the female dogs we had, at least not at a young age.
She doesn't seem to be bothered by the chickens. We let them out to free range and they have been all around the pen we have her in. She seems fine with them.
It is very hard to tell from a picture, but she looks a bit older to me...a year plus. At least in the third picture.
Her teeth would really be the best indicator. If she has any puppy teeth, she is under 6 months; sharp white shiny adult teeth, 6 months to 18 months or 2 years? If her teeth have any discolouration around the gum line she is probably over 2?
If you google "how to tell a dogs age from its teeth" there are a lot of sites. Here is one:

But maybe you don't feel you know her well enough to be messing around with her teeth?:0)

It's possible she's old enough that she's had a litter of pups, and that might explain the large nipples.
Thanks Catscan, I'll pry her mouth open tomorrow.
We made her a bed in her outside pen. We took a plastic tote container and layed it on the side, then put a soft pillow in it and she crawled in. Then we closed off part off it so she feels secure. When I walked away she came out and looked at me but then crawled back in her new nest.
She is very sweet and tame, I feel so bad for her. We put up a lost dog sign, but so far no takers.
gallesfarm, that is what we are thinking, that possibly she has had pups since they are so big. Our 4 year old dogs are unnoticeable but she is a different breed and has been altered so we weren't sure if that may be something this breed has that "sticks out" more.
Maybe your totally right about her having puppies, but she has such a puppy look about her. What do I know??? I am certain of one thing though. I'm certain she has found the right people to care for her until she finds a permanent home...l'm grateful for that. I don't know how I missed that third pic, but I did. After looking at that pic I would have to agree with Catsy, She looks like she could be a couple years old there, and maybe a little older.

Looking at those nipples she has definitely had a a litter of pups and I also see a mole or skin tag high on her chest. Ive never seen that in a pup.
She does have a very puppy look to her, but the nipples and I think her feet say she is older. I'm going to check her teeth today.
We fear she was dumped because she is so small that I doubt she would wonder very far. We live a good distance from the road so it isn't like she wondered down the driveway a short way and found us, she had to go quite a way and the houses here are all spaced by quite a bit since everyone is on acreage.
I just feel bad for her, she is so sweet.
Those are adult teeth :)
Thats what I thought. She must be a mixture of minis because she is so small. I love her puppyish face though, so sweet.
She almost has a rat terrier look to her, is she light on her feet and prancy?
oh you're right, I looked them up and she does look a lot like them. I haven't noticed whether she is light on her feet and prancy, this morning she is staying in her nest. It's a bit cool out and she shivers, she is curled up on her pillow in the tote we put out for her.
I'd say Keep her if no one claims her, she chose you all so that must be a good sign.. (if you can keep her)
Have you posted on the pet forum?
Looks like a doxy X. Likely chi or rat terrier. I'd vote for the latter. She is cute.
She loves my daughter. Everytime she goes outside the little dog whines for her attention. She doesn't seem to do that with any of the rest of us. Yesterday my daughters gerbil died. She was very upset. Sort of strange how this little dog showed up the day she lost her gerbil and has attached herself to my daughter. If no one claims her we may keep her although I'm not sure we could afford the vet bill for another pet.
wren107 I haven't posted on a pet forum, didn't even realize there was one. I'm mostly on here discussing chickens and ducks. I'll pull that one up, thanks!
smedgekles, if you tell your vet that this is a rescued stray and that you really want to keep it and give it a good home but you need a break on the bill he or she may just give you a break. Especially if you say you want to get her spayed. Mine did. If yours wont' then check with a couple more vets. Also, check at TSC because they often have affordable vaccine day. I often see folks lined up in the parking lot with their dogs. Alternately you might check with the local SPCA. They sometimes have a list of vets who will give discounts to folks adopting strays.
Thanks for the info Terri Much appreciated.
Here is a link for cheap Spay in your area $50 if I read it right

smedgekles you are welcome. Please join us on other threads.
Heavinscent, thanks for the link.
One of those places is about 10 miles from us. I've been there before looking for a lost pet once when one of our cats disappeared, they are always sooo busy an animals are everywhere. You drop your animal off by 8:30 in the morning and then pick it up at 4 or 5 in the afternoon.
I had a long-haired miniture Dachshund, and she was an awesome dog!! Smartest dog I've had too! She rang a bell to go outside instead of barking. That was nice. Dachshunds can give you "looks" too; their faces are real expressive. They also think they're German Shepherds.....in teeeny tiny bodies. ;) lol The only thing I've noticed is if they are not raised with little kids, from a puppy, they can often become nippy and irritated by them.
This little dog absolutely loves my daughter. She will whimper when she goes outside till of course my daughter can't resist and picks her up and brings her in.
I like the ringing the bell to go out. What a dog! We have a chicken that will peck on the back door to come in. Too funny.
Does she have a name yet?
I think she has found a home...
We have been calling her Little Missy. Not sure if that will stick or not.
We know one thing, she doesn't like to be in the rain. It was drizzling this morning and she wouldn't go into her hut, she stayed out yipping and chewing on her fence trying to get out. So of course I went out and got her and took her to my daughter who was still in bed. She layed on her bed till my daughter got up and then followed her around wagging her tiny tail. All was good in her doggy mind.
Such a happy story, sounds like your daughter has a new best friend
Awwwwwww! Yes, I think she is the new gerbil.
Don't wory about dropping your dog off and then picking it up later. I have to do that as I work alot/all day. One of the vet techs calls me to tell me what the dog is doing if we are doing surgery and such and they also have a webcam you can log on to to watch the "healthy dog holding/kennel area" so you can see for yourself if just dropped off for shots, etc. I think it is becoming the thing to do now. It is quite convenient for me although at first I felt like I was abandoning the dog, now we are used to it and don't think anything of it.
Its funny how animals seem to come into your life when you truly need them. Almost like they were sent to you for a reason :) I love a happy ending!
She looks much more "doxie" in the last shot.
