Got pods on the okra!

Tonto Basin, AZ

They're kinda small but, hey, it's a start. Hard to see the six little plants in the picture.

Gosh, they are teeny! Can they hold up a whole pod?

The ground is still so cool here. One of my okra poked its head out Saturday, but I think it saw its shadow and went back down...

Hard to believe those tiny little plants have that that big of buds already! Mine don't/won't flower till they're 2' tall out in the garden!

Wow! How did you get them to bloom that soon? BTW, you can eat okra blooms. I found two recipes for them.

LOL on the shadow Realbirdlady! Too funny!

My okra is still a gleam in its' Mamas eye. I need to put the seed to soak so I can plant by next weekend. It did well in the Twiggybeds (water beds) last summer.

I seeded the okra in pots in the house in January, intending to plant them when nights were still cold but days sunny and mild. Just an experiment - protect them with a big cold frame heated with a couple of heat lamps (the structure in the picture) to see how they would develop in the sun heated cold frame. It took way longer to complete than expected - that's a whole 'nother story. Guess the experiment will have to wait 'til next winter.

The plants were almost this size when I planted them out a month ago. They quickly put on flower blooms, but haven't grown much & I never saw any of the flowers open. I've since reseeded another batch of okras. My expectation is that the plants pictured won't do well. At least, that's what's happened in the past to tomato plants that I left in seed pots for a very long time - when planted out they lived, but never prospered.

I planted some Okra that pod sent me this past weekend, and we're warming up, so hopefully they will do well. Never grown Okra before;o)

Here are my six week old okras. I started them inside and moved them out three weeks ago. I think I have a long way to go to get pods. I've never grown them either. I do love eating the little buggers though. It's hard to get real fresh ones around here.

Oh my, you're going to have a jungle!

I'm surprised they're hard to find in JAX. My people are all in the south part of the GA coast, and they seem pretty standard there.

My thought exactly on the jungle depending on the cultivar. I plant a non branching okra.

Your planting may be hard to pick the inner plants? Wear long sleeve shirt while doing so or you will be itchy. LOL

A suggestion if anyone wants to plant in the square foot method, maybe plant a single or double row of okra in the middle of a bed where you can reach from each side?

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh! I meant jungle in the best possible sense of the word. We grow them sort of semi-ornamentally. I do just have the spineless kind though.

Mine are planted in the 2' x 12' bed for easy access:o)

Okra plants are beautiful!

Hi Frank, you guys can grow Okra up there already? What's the daytime temps? I can't for the life of me get it to grow. Eggplant either.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

SSssshhhssh! Don't tell Kelly!
Seems things go good till someone tells me I can't do it or it won't work. 8 )

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Yeah Jeanine - don't rain on my Okra parade - lol... Gonna give 'er the 'ol college try.

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

Wonder why it won't ~ it is a warm season plant. Perhaps the soil in AZ is a bit different. Here once we warm up, it grows like weeds. A SIL in MN tries every summer but the temps aren't high enough nor the growing season long enough.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Mine are in raised beds with my own soil mix, so hope they do well.

meisgreen, I seeded these inside. Soil''s not warm enough yet to germinate okra seed outside.

podster, okra loves it here & it grows like weeds here too, soon as the soil warms.

Wasn't meaning to rain on anyones parade :-) I'm jealous - how the heck does he do it! LOL.

Podster, it the Tonto Basin area is much colder then the Phoenix area.

Now why the heck I can't get my okra to grow is a mystery - my corn is already almost 3' high!
