I haven't found a way to sex BCM or Blue Marans...I did read somewhere that in Andalusian Blue genetics the splash are more likely to be pullets. But I don't know that that is true. I have a Blue Splash Cochin teenager that looks awfully rooish.

I did notice that in his pictures of the blue copper marans there are a lot of blue splash hens but i dident notice a blue spalsh roo in the mix.

I LOVE Marans! They have the prettiest faces of all chicken in my opinion! I can tell you that chick in the first pic with his back to us is a roo.. My guess.. not 100%

In fact, you might not want to listen to me at all.. I'm trying to wish 3 Dominique roos into pullethood.. it's not working.. :(

ZZ has three identical Dominique teenagers...all three are absolutely identical...and the sweetest birds imaginable. Soft, gentle, totally charming.

But they are clearly roos...light silver colour, light feet, broad rose combs.

One's comb is just the tiniest bit narrower...that is her "pullet."

Love is blind:0)

Catscan i agree the dominiques are like the barred rock they are like a big dog.always in the way but want to know everything you are doing.ZZ i think if we wish hard enough it could happen!! Im gonna help ya wish! hehehehe
im so swamped in chicks right now i had to quit filling the bators! im going to set just one this time with mostly serama eggs and eggs from my new Blue splash cochin bantam.we are waiting on a couple of batches of eggs from ebay but that should finish what we wanted for this year. Now we are building like crazy!

SHE WOLFE, Good luck staying away from the bator.... I am already planning my next load and this one still has atleast 2 weeks maybe more.... IT is all CMoxon, Catscan, ZZ and Haystacks fault, I tell ya...Them pictures with the babies have had me dreaming of someday having my own babies for over a year... Then a package arrived in the mail one day and Behold the most wonderful thing to grace our life in years... the Bator.... and well the rest is history. I have orders for Baby Chicks, geese and ducks, from people that will buy and raise in the back yard, and I am sure that I can sell Turkeys which is what I think I will be loading the bator with next...

so SheWolfe, good luck.... when is the next bator load??

Hi, Well, I am not too experienced at this, but at about three weeks or so the roos have a very red comb starting. (At least mine did) The gals still have the same comb.
My roo also was a lot bigger then the rest.

well my shipment came in this morning!!! wow the marans are big chicks! He sent 3 extra(BCM) in case i lost any but they all look awesome except one of the blue polish. I think it will bounce back tho.he even sent 2 extra blue polish! I got only 6 of my 10 milli fluer cochin bantam chicks but he told me ahead of time he wouldent have enough so he sent 4 blue marans in their place. Brandon at Bishops rare and exotic poultry is a great person to deal with.

Right ZZ's I'm through hatching also. I just finished hatching out a doz welsummers, six black/coppers, a doz golden cuckoo's and ten black austrolorps. Now ZZ's I have a question, I left the eggturner going all during the hatch and it didn't seem to matter, they all hatched except two. I didn't do it on purpose I just forgot to take it out. I know you had a hovabator and I wondered if you had ever done that. I was shocked when I realized they were still turning. Have you ever done that?

Haystack...if we are honest and have incubated enough eggs, we all have. And yes, they do seem to hatch just as well. Especially bantams.

I bought the "the chick needs to orient itself" explanation. And maybe it does help, especially in the case of some of the more violent turners (my Suro is particularly energetic), but it may just be that it is no longer necessary to turn them after day 18? Up to that point, it does stimulated growth.

Anyone know the " truth"?

Thanks for the response Catsy.

I bet hens don't stop moving their eggs on a certain day.
