I have seen several references to putting out jelly for the birds......How do you do it? Is there a special feeder for jelly?
I live in an area where orioles are very scarce but there are some. If I put out jelly in the remote hope of getting an oriole, what other birds might I attract? Also, what other critters might happen to be attracted? I have lots of squirrels and am in the woods so mice are a bit of a problem. Thanks
Feeding Jelly?
Hi PNW, There are special feeders for jelly but you could also set something up yourself. Here are some Oriole feeders you can order. Click on photos to enlarge.

This one has the saucer for nectar and little cups for jelly. http://www.rachelsrobin.com/shop/index.php?page=shop-flypage-11208
Here is even on that attaches to a jar of jelly. http://www.duncraft.com/JellyJam-Fruit-Feeder-P2703C246.aspx?UserID=15384464&SessionID=BxFUb6o4KumEnnRRkOVx
Other birds that might enjoy it would be some Warblers, Mockingbirds, Finches and Woodpeckers.
I'm not sure if squirrels would be interested in the jelly or not. I'm sure others will chime in with their experiences.
I put out an oriole feeder last year thinking I didn't have much chance of attracting them. I'd seen some down on the creek, but I live up on a hill with few trees. Didn't really think I could pull them up there. To my surprise, they found the feeder in just a few days. Few other birds ate the grape jelly I placed in it. Orioles are attracted to the color orange, so you might want to use that in your feeder.
I was in SW TX last week and the people that ran the lodge just wrapped wire around a baby food jar and hung it from a line or tree branch. Orioles didn't seem to mind the cheap diner.
I just use a little metal cat dish....
