CLOSED: Finch? Warbler?

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

This is probably just a goldfinch, but seemed a little different. I didn't get any pics of the side or top unfortunately. Can you tell from just this photo?

Possibly a Yellow-throated Vireo.

I hope so! Here is another pic that almost shows the side. Don't know if it will help.

Agree with yellow-throated vireo.

I just went through all the warblers and vireos in my book and I think y'all are right. My question for you is: how can you tell that it's a Yellow-throated Vireo and not a Pine Warbler?

Here's one more pic that I didn't think would help, but perhaps you can see the eye better.

I don't think that can be done, because I reckon it probably IS a Pine Warbler ;-)

Very tough pics, but what clinches it for me is the slender, needle-pointed beak; vireos have stouter beaks with a distinctly hooked tip. I'm fairly certain this would show on the first pic if it was a vireo, and it doesn't.

LOL! Clinches it for you does it? I'll have to take your word on that one. I just went back and forth between the two, and I can see a slight difference in the photos in the book, but I'd have to take a stellar photo to be able to tell -- or maybe have them sitting side by side on the same branch.

Yeah, no guarantee that I'm right!

Next time, why not concentrate on observing and noting the field marks, say through binoculars or, yes, via the camera if that's what you have, rather than on getting a photo? Therein lies the answer...

Rockport, TX(Zone 9a)

Unfortunately, that never works for me. For one thing, this one was moving around too fast. I just pointed in the general direction and clicked. If I try to note the field marks, I always end up missing the one that turns out to be essential. My eyesight is bad. My memory is worse. Also, I feel more comfortable adding it to the list if I have proof. That's just me though.

Thanks for everyone's help.

I know what you mean about the eyesight/ memory thing. I don't always take the camera/tripod with me because it's too cumbersome.
I always try to keep a paper and pen on me while bird watching along with the binoculars. Otherwise I would really be in trouble. :-)

Resin, is correct with the bill not matching that of a Vireo...I also noticed that in the first picture also, and my field guide under Yellow-throated Vireo says (see Pine Warbler) after going back forth between the 2 bird's I decided to say Possibly a Yellow-throated Vireo knowing that the Id forum would iron out some sort of conclusion even if it does not give a firm Id so in the end I couldn't tell if it was a Yellow-throated Vireo or a Pine Warbler. lol

The puzzling is amazing fun, but I find Resin's compass is usually correct.

Resin has taught me quite a bit since Ive been here at DG. I pay strict attention to his Id's! Props!

Elphaba: Check out these pic's in Bird Files of the two. It looks more like the Pine Warbler to me too, because of the bill/beak. I see that Resin is good at identifying birds as well as plants!

I'd completely forgotten about the bird files. I need to go there and just play! Thanks!
