I finally sold a dozen eggs... Actually it was to my sister and I said I would not take her money, so she got me back by giving me a 50 pd bag of lay crumbles.. WHOOO HOOO SCORE!!
Now the doc wants a dozen, if he pays me then that would be great, if not thats ok, he is a good doc....
My chicken ranch is on its way to becoming a working ranch...OK so we have a long way to go, but we are going somewhere...
I finally sold my first dozen eggs
barter is always better than payment anyway in my opinion!
Rock on darling, Rock on. I'm loving it. Roseane, thanks so much for that gymkanna film. You win over Hollywood anytime. Keep on producing, eggs -n movies. Sound better than popcorn to me...LOL Loved the movie. I have watched it at least four or five times. Hay.
You are welcome Mr. Haystack, II am just learning how to do the movies... That was fun..
I like bartering for eggs, it makes me feel like I accomplished something I mean getting money is good, but getting something that we can use and will last longer than the money makes me smile. I was down to crumbs on my chicken food, now I have 50 pds...
Congratulations! Yeah, I like the idea of bartering for eggs too. Way to go!
I give my neighbors eggs, to bribe them.,so that they don't report me to the" powers that be." My neighbors really like my chickens. Otherwise I would have to get a $400 permit.. It just seems so silly that any one would not like chickens. I have a bumper sticker on my car that says "When chickens are outlawed, only outlaws will have chickens."
So....how much do you guys sell them for? I told a lady at my farm stand that I'd have them for $3 a dozen and she flipped out. Says she never pays more than $1.50 a dozen from other farmers. That's almost the same as the watery, ancient eggs in the grocery store! She also balked at my wanting $3 a pound for my heirloom tomatoes. Maybe it was just her? I have noticed Craigslist ads for eggs for $1.50 a dozen. I'm just thinking that will only keep me in feed, and nothing else. I still don't think they'd be a waste of time, since I love them all to death, but I was hoping to make a LITTLE money extra to offset the ridiculous amount of money I've spent on their housing.
people here who have free range or even just home grown eggs get $3 a dozen or $2.75 if they give back the empty egg carton. if people don't want to pay that much, then you must either have a LOT of people selling eggs in that area, or they just don't want eggs that are better than the grocery store. but the people i interact with do most of their exchanges by barter and trade anyway.
maybe you should try $2, it is not much more than the grocery store but enough to justify homegrown eggs versus factory farm eggs as an explanation when they ask. our grocery stores here vary during the year, never less than $1.50 and up to $3, you never know how much they'll be when you go.
There are ads on Craigslist around here for $3. all the time. Then once in a while they offer a doz for $2. if you bring a carton.. $2.50 if the customer has no egg carton.
You could offer them for .50 cents and SOMEONE is gonna flip out.. and still try to talk you down. LOL You can't please all the people all the time. :)
5 of my 6 girls are laying now... WHOOO HOOO
Mevanmart, try $2.50 a doz. That should pay for your feed bill and your eggs will be free. I don't try to get back what I put into their coop and up keep. I figure thats the cost I swallow in order to enjoy my chickens as I do. Just remember some people are to cheep, cheep, to want to pay anything, some call them shoplifters I call them thieves...LOL. Hay.
Yeah, Hay - seems like everyone out here I've spoken to expects to pay $1.50. I guess that's what they'll pay since there is no way we can eat all of the eggs ourselves! I'm hoping my farmer's market income will help offset the cost of the coop and run.
I finally sold some ducks, 5 bucks a piece, have 8 more to go from this first hatching. I have still 6 geese, maybe have two of them sold today and two on saturday, the only trick will be to get them out from the momma. If I can get all 6 of them out of the pen today, then I will be happy....
You need to hire or dare a macho teen age boy to go in and pick up Mrs Goose. Then collect her offspring at your leisure. "Come on, she's just a bird!"
LOL can I come and watch????
Sell videos instead of eggs?
We sell ours for $2. I was selling them for $1.50 and one of my customers told me I wasn't charging enough. Eggs are about that in the supermarket - anywhere from $1.50 to $4 depending on how free-range and/or organic they are. Mine aren't organic because we don't buy organic feed, but they're definitely free-range - and brown.
The problem is I moved Momma in with Daddy and another Momma which is her sister sitting on eggs... LOL that is going to be tooo funny. Wish I knew some cocky teens though...
Yes it would now need to be a group effort. Perhaps some future bull riders from the next rodeo? (Not the mutton busters.)
I have an offer to get all 6 of the geese@10 bucks a piece... Since i have another goose sitting, I am really tempted to sell all of thm to this guy, he has an acre pond..
Go for it! But he has to catch them himself.
Actually he was of the elder age but brought a friend with him and it took me holding the adults back in the corner and Teresa and Kurt grabbing babies to get all 6 of them... They are gone.. It broke Momma's heart...
Glad you sold the geese. good score! Your place is starting to pay off. I may put a few dozen eggs at the local country store. I was thinking $2.25 a dozen. Mine are a mixed lot. Some really big, some just large, some bantam and a duck egg every day which is the biggest of all. Should I mix them up or keep the bantam eggs and the duck eggs for us?
Okay, so good news - while everyone locally seems to want eggs dirt cheap, we brought some of our friend's eggs to the farmer's market, and after the first two people heard the price and left, the next customer just asked for a dozen and didn't even ask the price. We sold all four dozen in an hour for $3 a dozen. We made a dollar of that ($2 for our friend) and now I can't WAIT to have eggs so I can start raking in the dough (and maybe offset the cost of my ravenous girls' feed!). Very excited!
Way to go Mevnmart... I have 2 standing orders each week, not alot but my girls are only laying 4 to 6 a day so I can handle that... Now this fall I should have more laying and then be looking for more takers..
