Anthurium rugulosum

Gainesville, FL

I have been growing this plant for about 2 years. I was initially told not to bother, that it wouldn't do well here in Florida because its too hot. But it has been doing very well. It has gotten larger and is very healthy. Its one of my favorite plants. Anyone else growing it? To give you an isea about the size of that leaf in the foreground, the Licuala palm frond beside it is about 12 inches across

Love that leaf texture! Very nice.

You're obviously doing something right.

Dr. Tom Croat of the Missouri Botanical Garden told me years ago not to try since it grows in the cool higher elevations of the Ecuadorian Andes. I tried anyway and as soon as the summer hit the plant began to shrink and finally died.

I am aware of a few others in Hawaii that are growing it well but even their plants suffer during the summer. Not sure what you are doing but good growing.

Most Anthurium that are not the common Heart Flower / Flamingo Flower, Anthurium x ferrierense, seem to be sensitive to environmental stress.
I grow several species that have survived only in cool, moist, shady microclimates, at 900 ft. elev. They won't grow in more exposed areas here, and my friends in the lowlands can't get them to grow.

Gothqueen is certainly doing something right! Maybe you keep your greenhouse cool & moist?

Average temps in my GH range from about 48-50 at night in winter to 85 or a little over in summer. So no, its not really cool. But it is moist and I water this plant daily. I am growing it in a clay pot filled with lava rock and wood chips, sunk into the ground, in sun

I'd love to cross that A. rugulosum with A. fausto-mirandae!

send me some pollen, LOL

Nice Anthurium goth. You have a tremendous green thumb for growing plants in the Araceae family.
