FEEDING BIRDS IN THE WARMER MONTHS

Lilburn, GA(Zone 7b)

I'm a lurker but have appreciated all your responses when I have had a question.

As you can see, I am in the Atlanta, Ga area. I feed during the winter months.

What's everyone's opinion of feeding during the summer? Type of food? I do make sure that there is fresh water available at all times of the year. We really enjoy watching them have fun in that birdbath!

I wanted to mention how excited I am....had bluebirds show up for me for the first time ever this last winter. My DH built me a wonderful cedar house for them and they are actually using it!

thanks so much!

I keep food out all year. Not as much grain in the summer. Replace some of the feeders with HB feeders and my oriole feeder is going up today. I don't have the large flocks in summer that I do in winter, but still a steady stream of birds to keep me amused. The winter birds that migrate north are replaced with others, so it all kinda balances out.

Hi Carole, I feed all year too although in the summer months I have less seed feeders out. Suet is out year round too as it's important for feeding young birds and young woodpeckers love to eat it. Of course in the summer it is a No Melt Suet.
The seeds I use are mainly sunflower seeds and sometimes peanut halves or peanuts in the shell. I also have 1 nyjer feeder out.

Congratulations on your Bluebirds!!! That is so exciting, be sure to keep us posted on their progress.

Here is another thread that address's these same issue's. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1087741/

Feed year round here too. I feed suet, sunflower seed, safflower seed and Nyjer seed . Assorted fruit for those that like fruit and nectar for the orioles & hummers.

Gosh....it appears to be a personal choice.

We enjoy them so much I will keep a feeder up for the summer and also a suet feeder.

I have been putting up hummer feeders for a couple of years and do have plants to attract them. Between DH and myself we have never seen one. We do change the nectar every other day (1 part to 4) to make sure it is fresh. Has anyone else had this problem?

Thoughts and suggestions appreciated.

Hi carole, Do you have any tall vines for them in your yard? Mine were first attracted to the Trumpet Vines in my yard. I usually do not recommend them unless you have a lot of space because they can be invasive. They really love the Honeysuckle "Alabama Crimson" vine and I would love to have another one of them. There is a lot of color in my yard between the
5 Trumpetvines, 2 Honeysuckle vines, Monarda and many other flowering plants on the ground. Some people put up artificial things of red in a high spot to get hummers attention. I'm sure you'll hear more from other people here. :-)
