Monkey Puzzle Tree
Araucaria araucana

This tree has survived for years in Zone 6 at the Louisville Zoo, taking temperatures as low as -20 F, probably due to the protection it receives from the high wall beside it.

I'm intrigued my the monkey puzzle. Berl Williams landscaping has had them in the past for sale. I'd love to try my luck with one. Where in the zoo is this monkey puzzle. I'm here in Louisville

Thanks

It was in the Lemur enclosure, but they cut it down last year. It was planted in sort of a pit that surrounded the enclosure. I think that that sort of sheltered area is best for trying them here... such as near a masonry wall that can retain heat.

Monkey Puzzle is only marginally hardy here. However the one at the zoo actually survived several winters with negative temperatures, including that -22 crazy winter back in the 90s. A plant somewhat similar and very hardy here is Cunninghamia lanceolota. They have large flattened needles similar to Auricarias. They sort of resemble a blend of an Auricaria and a Fir. They are unique, somewhat prehistory looking. The Blue form is absolutely gorgeous, much prettier than blue spruce and better suited to our climate but for reasons I don't understand are rarely planted here. I have been doing my best to plant them around town, even giving them as gifts so that Louisville will have as many of these lovelies as possible.

Thanks Slade

Next time you run across or order a Cunninhamia lanceolata give me a shout. I'd love to add one to my collection.

I like the prehistoric look of the needles emerging from the trunk.

Or if you can recommend a place to get one that would be great

Thanks
