Julie,

When the weather warms enough, you've got to get the upright one out in the ground. If you do, it might get over 6 feet with big leaves - then your only problem will be what to do in the Fall!

Luckily I have 20 ft ceilings!!! My Yucca is taking it very well. LOL

I love'em all!!!!

You must have a greenhouse. How big is your greenhouse?? I want one!!! It gets cold here and I want a place to put even more stuff in. LOL

Gainesville, FL

yes, I do have a greenhouse, but all of these plants are hardy here where I live. They go dormant when it gets cold, and come back up in spring, and usually by end of May I have large stands of stuff. Also, it helps a great deal to grow the colocasias in tubs of water here. We are on mandatory water restrictions, and colocasias love water, so its the easiest way to bet big plants without getting fined.

This is just a small number of what I actually have in my yard. I have a ton more.

My greenhouse is a little over 1700 sq feet and I try to use it for growing true tropicals that would die here in winter, and for overwintering stuff that I am pretty certain won't come back like these elephant ears do.

Louisville, KY

Florida had record weather this year. I bet alot of people lost their tropicals. That's a shame.
I want a greenhouse real bad, but I only have 2 1/2 acres, so I would have to have a small one.
Thanks!!!

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

Julie, you "only have 2 1/2 acres"?? I wish I had one acre - my total area is less than 1/4 acre, yet I have three greenhouses, one shadehouse and a lot of plants out in the sun. Believe it or not, there is still room for some yard in front and in back, and for the house itself!!!

If I "only had 2 1/2 acres", I'd have a botanical garden - Aroidia at it's finest.

Gainesville, FL

LOL Lari Ann its not as easy as it sounds. We have 5 acres and its all I can do to upkeep the greenhouse and the various cultivated beds around it and the house. Now if I had no family and was a hermit with 24/7 to devote to the garden...maybe! I even have a yard dude to help out too and I still can;t keep up with it

Miami, FL(Zone 10a)

I, too, have a hard time keeping up, but the reason is more that I need to be able to work at it full time, which means I have to be able to earn a living with my plants alone (no "day job"). I'm on my way to that, but not quite there yet. With acres, I could do so much more that would provide funds or obviate the need for funds, such as a large veggie garden, production quantities of some of my plants, etc.

noonamah, Australia

Larger areas are a mixed blessing. I've got 9.1 hectares (about 22.6 acres). Whilst I'm often wallowing in the advantages, it's not so nice when I'm sweating the disadvantages. One of the biggest drawbacks is I'm away a lot working to pay the mortgage and maintenance. I just keep hoping that light I see at the end of the tunnel isn't a train.

Louisville, KY

LariAnn, I would love to do it, but I really don't know where to start. I just bought some plants from Brian Saturday. I am running out of room in the house. I guess I will have to run a fan in the house over the winter. I have a ton of plants, but I know without air the bugs will get'em. I have great lighting here because one wall in my kitchen is all windows on the southeast side. As well as in my Living Room.
I am planting Pink China, Black Pearl, Teacups. It's cold here so my tropical jungle has to come in. The Pink Chinas and the Black Pearl will live and come back. Not any others I don't think. I have a Colocasia Gigantea sp? Portadora, Hilo Bay, Zebrina, Borneo Giant, Black Stemmed I got from you and got one from Brian, Mojitos, Fontanesii, Black Magic, Black Runner, Illustrius, and so on..... I am not sure if the Gigantea will survive in the ground here or not??? I bring all my Uprights in after it gets cold.
Where do you get a shadehouse?? Forgive me for my ignorance. I am sure I see them. Is just shadecloth over a structure???
Part of my yard is for veggies. I am growing a vegetable garden. That's nothing compared to the back yard!! Veggie garden is on the side. My house sits on a lake shared by those who live here in 2 to 10 acre tracts. Of course, I would love to have more land, but I love it here. It is beautiful. I will send pics once I get everything established. It's mostly Ash trees toward the lake and pretty clear close to the house 1 tree is close to the veggie garden. I do a lot of the mowing in the summer because I work for the school system. I am off all summer and I just love that!!! Julie

Gainesville, FL

a shadehouse is a structure that they use in So FL and other warmer climates to provide shade from the hot sun and a canopy in winter for plants. It isn;t the same as a greenhouse. You need a greenhouse with the capability to heat.

Louisville, KY

That's what I thought. I have seen some here, but only for the summer purposes.

Louisville, KY

Gothqueen, Where did you get your variegated macro?? I want one!!! Julie

Gainesville, FL

Its been many years ago now. I got it from a friend locally who found it at a plant sale I believe at Marie Selby Gardens in the mid-1990's

Louisville, KY

Man!!! I would love to have that!!! I wonder if they have any???
