I have quite afew of the upright sedums. Many of Autumn Joy and Brilliant for more years than I can remember. Then also lots of Matrona, which I really like. Then I got one Purple Emperor and like it so much I bought two more this spring. Then I decided to get something new so I ordered Lynda Windsor and sedumn telephium Picolette both from Bluestone Perennials. They have a very good selection of sedum there. Got six of each of those last two, they are very small plants that they send.
The bees absolutely go crazy for the blooms as soon as they start to open. Covered in honeybees all the time.
Adding new Sedum to the garden.
Do you have a sedum garden, or just mix them among your other stuff?
They are just in various places around the garden.
Rita, we are birds of a feather! I love Sedums, particularly the uprights. What kind of sun exposure does your Purple Emperor get? I had some in the front yard where its full sun, with strong, hot evening sun. Figured Sedums would be a no brainer for that area, and other than Purple Emperor, they love it. By mid to late summer, the leaves of PE developed scorched looking patches, bleached to almost white. I've moved them to the other side of the house where they get morning sun, but I'm not sure they're going to get enough sun to color up well. We'll see in the weeks to come.
Have you tried 'Black Jack'? I love it, its a Matrona type with dark purple leaves, and it does beautifully out in the front yard. I've also got a variegated one, something 'Frost' in the name, maybe 'Morning Frost'? It has white variegation and white blooms. Each year it gets some solid green growth that I break off to keep it from reverting.
I love that they're the easiest plant in the world to propagate! I just break off stems and stick them in the ground where I want new ones. The next year, each one is a perfect little clump.
I only have the upright kinds. I had tried some of the lower or creaping ones in the past but they simply didn't work for me.
We will see how the Purple Emperor does this year. Last year it did get some shade. This year the tree that gave some shade to the area of the front yard fell down early this spring. So there is now full sun. The new Purple Emperors I bought go in part shade. The Lynda Windors in full sun.
I do have Matrona and just love it but had never heard of Black Jack. I guess I will be looking for it now LOL!
I have noticed that the Sedums can take lots more shade and still thrive and bloom more heavily than I thought possible. My Matronas are mostly in full sun and there seems to be no difference betwen the full sun ones and the ones with some shade and sun.
I have started a long narrow garden in back of the Servicebery row in my backyard. This had two transplanted Matrona Sedum, the two new Purple Emperor Sedum that I planted today and four groupings of 3 each lily bulbs. The very middle will get the Cannas that are currently started in pots. Then in the fall it all gets daffodil bulbs. Still needs some filler, I think going to put some of my Geum in there also.
I planted the lily bulbs in there too today and the two Purple Emperor. Its a good start.
Then later I went out and planted the six small Lynda Windsor in the front yard. So all the sedums I bought that are here are planted. I still have the sedumn telephium Picolette to get. It is in transit. I know where those are going and after I plant them I will see how the garden section were I want them looks. Its going to need more plants than those to fill it up.
I still have to go out and water everything.
I got the sedumn telephium Picolette planted today. Weeding took longer than the planting as these are small plants that get stuck in a small planting hole.
I will have to take some pictures of what I did with the new sedum but I think it is all going to turn out nicely.
This last batch, the SEDUM telephium Picolette I needed to rescue a little half round garden I started last spring. I had put all Siberian Iris there but some of them died by last fall. Then I didn't know what to do there by that time. So these plants are planted as the first row directly as the little gardenbed started, then there are the surviving Siberian Iris in back of them and then nothing. I need to put something back there. Probably do with my old standby of just sticking afew lily bulbs in there. Its not a large space.
If I can find a flate of violas I might stick some of them in there for extra color.
Then there is this long and skinny garden in back of my Serviceberry shrubs. Has two transplanted Matrona Sedum and two newly bought Purple Emperor Sedum. Between the sedum I planted Lily Bulbs. Plant to put daffs in the fall. Also going to look for some violas to plant in betwen the sedum.
The middle of the garden row gets my cannas that I started in pots. Still needs some work but I think it is going to turn out nice.
