Why did my hyacinths fall over?

New Milford, CT

This is my first time with hyacinthus orientalis. They came up gangbusters, but the ones closest to the house came up earliest, in early March, and got much taller than the others. Then most of them fell over, and died off quickly. I think they get a little more sun than they ones further from the house, but not much. And I'd suspect I didn't plant those particular bulbs deep enough, but my DH planted all of them and unlike me, he doesn't make goofs like that. :-) Any thoughts?

I think they got more reflected heat, which can cause plants to get taller esp. if there is a big difference in the night time temperatures - the bigger the difference, the taller the plants get. Also the hotter it is the faster they finish blooming and go dormant. Did they get enough water? Sometimes areas close to the house are dryer than other areas because they are sheltered from the rain. The bulbs should be fine even if they did finish early.

Ah, reflected heat, that makes perfect sense. Thanks for that input! Maybe next year I'll rig up a line to keep them standing at least, because the house will still be there! DH is good at that kind of thing, too, and it's kind of "his" bed.

Preventing hyacinth flop---Scott of Old House Gardens has talked about a method of using sticks, (my idea is cheap wooden or plastic chopsticks) just stick them in the ground next to the buds, but not so deep that they injure the bulbs, and as the buds open the florets will grasp around the stick and be supported. Eventually, mine still grow so tall that they lean but by then the flowers are pretty well past their prime.

Good idea! Mine fell over due to the excess moisture...wind, rain and snow...

Thanks for the idea -- I'm saving it into my plant database for next spring!

And, of course, when they are through with their bloom, they fall over then as well....

Also, in addition to the reflected heat, sometimes bulbs near the house will get less sun and stretch more due to the shade. That is what I am assuming is causing the issue with mine as the bulbs near the house are much taller than those farther away but they also get a lot less sun.
