New chicken run

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

Son got this done today. The panels were benches in a greenhouse we bought many moons ago.

Incredible! Can I bring my chickens over to play?

Clever job of recycling!

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

I am thinking that is a wonderful place to play.... and I have a few broken pallets I thought about tearing down and using for a coop, who knows what sunday might bring...

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Very nice!!

(Zone 5b)

That's a really nice big run, your Son did a great job!

Bernie, that must have been quite a greenhouse! What a nice run for your chickens. Do you have any ideas for how to keep some greenery in there? Ours denude any area they have access to, very quickly.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

We put them in there 6 PM Friday. By noon Saturday, anything green was gone.
I always question people who claim to raise chickens on pasture. It would take an acre per chicken to keep grass alive!

Richmond, TX

Mine have about 1/4 acre per chicken - they haven't eaten it all but the area nearest the coops is rather "well groomed".

Southern NJ, United States(Zone 7a)

The ideal would be to have several pastures that you could close off and put the chickens into in turn. Ours use an old orchard and they've killed anything they like to eat, so all that's left are nuisance weeds which proliferate. Those include prickly pear cactus; I really wish they liked those!

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

i have 29 chickens on 3 acres... not a bare spot to be seen. Never have had them clear it all out. We even have to mow twice a week in the summer. My neighbor has 80 chickens on about 6 acres.. he mows twice a week also & not a bare spot too be seen. There is grass not weeds growing very well on both places.

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

That is what I thought, lots of acres to keep them from "clearing" it.
I would need over 8 acres. I only have 11.2 acres & that counts to the middle of the road & creek. 3 acres for buildings, 2 acres of grove & 5 acres for garden. Chickens are lucky to have a big run!

Richmond, TX

It is also necessary to start with well established pasture. Chickens wouldn't give newly sprouted grass a chance to grow.

Joplin, MO(Zone 6b)

that 3 acres has a house, barn, garage, flower beds, pool, a creek & lots of trees. Its not a lot. They really only stay on about the 1/2 acre of it all.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

My chickens cluster around our house. They like to be on the porch, which then gets messy. They want to be where the people are.

Richmond, TX

Ours do too. When I work around the barn they are always "helping". It only takes twice as long to do most chores while wading through chickens.
