Helped design the Ebucket last year but didn't get to do a lot of growing in them. Linda, I watch with envy your success, and kept quiet! Joyce your beautifully neat area made me ask myself, How does she do it; but alas, just had to accept your fine results with a sigh of "my time will come."
Finally, I have modest results to show!!
First shot is of a savoy cabbage, in a single Ebucket, I more or less neglected since Nov cause it just sat and seemed to be doing nothing; springtime came and look at this. Can't wait to see the fully developed head. I never grew cabbage before!
Look here!! Finally I can show!!
About a month ago I got a tray of cabbage plants from Lowe's. Put 6 in a self sustained box; should have put just 4. Look at this growth in about a month.
Wrong picture, these are in a raised bed (sq foot garden spacing) of the same batch of plants; this is new growth after pet chickens made a meal of them when they grew above the wire covering!

And finally just a shot of area as I am arranging and fixing beds in garden area. Never tried early spring growing before. Think I am hooked and will get serious next spring.
joyce, see why I envy your beautifully arranged space? My wife would love to get with you so ya'll could beat neat into my habits!

Mmmmmm.....Savoy cabbage looks great (my favorite kind for cooking). Great job!
That cabbage looks so good, the bugs got to mine too badly and I only salvaged one, not near as beautiful as the ones you are showing. Me neat? LOL My daughter is the felix and I'm the unger in this household just ask her, she will tell you my kitchen is a mess when I'm potting up things. Tuesday my manifolds will be in and I start finishing up my staking system and then start on my self watering systems I have planned; but, I have had nothing better to do this winter but plan. LOL

Gessieviolet!
OUTSTANDING! (Dave, we need bigger fonts...)
Don't you just love when they sit smack dab in the middle of the bucket? GREAT job!
Joy,
What bugs ate your cabbages up? The only bugs on my cabbages come when the weather starts warming up towards the end of my cole crop growing season. Then, I get aphids on the undersides of the leaves. I've learned to use that water blast from the hose to knock em off.
And, the snails start moving in, but, Sluggo Plus sprinkled in and around the eBuckets has handled the slugs and snails beautifully this last season.
Also, I find that having the lids on the eBuckets keeps the potting soil from splashing up around the base of the cabbages. Those rotting leaves on the undersides draw the pillbugs and snails. I keep the lids clean with a water blast from the hose, and keep those underside leaves trimmed off as they break down.
I had cabbage worms galore and they feasted on my poor cabbages, then with the freeze, there they went, managed to save one only out of about 6.

Joy,
What were your average temps when you grew your cabbages? Were you growing into the winter season, then throughout the winter?
Gymgirl: Cabbages are a cool weather veggie here and we had a late start on the cool weather and then got hit with a hot blast and then a cold one and it really hurt my cabbages. I suspect my onions are gonna be rather small this year also, I snuck a feel down in the dirt and didn't like the size I felt down there. LOL
