Is This a Butterfly Larva?

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

We found this on our tree today (a Sweetgum tree). Is it a butterfly larva looking for a place to make a cocoon or some bad bug we should kill?

The Luna Moth uses this tree as a host:

Scroll down and there is a picture of the caterpillar.

Thanks. I do see lots of Luna moths around here, they are gorgeous.

That doesn't look like a luna moth caterpillar??? I haven't raised them but did see plenty when I was in Georgia.

It still looks to be a good sized moth caterpillar. Raise it!!!

I don't know what a Luna Moth caterpillar looks like but Cat is right..it is a caterpillar of some sort.

or if not a luna moth cat it somewhat resembles eastern tiger swallowtail cat...either way, it's a good guy!
