System Image Restore points question

I have windows7 Home- When I go to System Restore and click on "show more restore points", there are 15 System Image Backups there, and when I do Disk Cleanup and delete all but the latest Restore Point, they don't get deleted. Don't these take a lot of hard drive space- and aren't they unnecessary? How do I delete them? Where do they live? I like to keep the restore points to a minimum. Thanks-
