Do I plant my "winter" squash now with my summer squash?
When to plant?
Yes. Winter squash and summer squash have the same cultural requirements.
Thanks for the info. Now I can get busy.
Cajun, be sure and check your weather forecast. Think I heard on the news tonite that frost is possible in a few nights.
I'm seeding them in trays to put under the light in the cellar. But thanks for the info. I will see if I need to cover anything else up.
Good thinking. I need to start my summer crop seeds too, just haven't got around to it, yet.
What are you growing Cajun?
So far I have broccoli, onions, garlic, potatoes and strawberries planted out. I have tomatoes, cukes and a few peppers ready to plant when the time is right. I just seeded melons and squash. They have not come up yet. And I have 2 trays of buttercrunch lettuce.
Nice. I'm not having a very auspicious start this year. First something or other, probably a rodent, ate my first flat of tomatoes in the basement, then "someone" dug up some of my freshly planted kohlrabi babies. Sheesh - so not fair. But we shall plug on - summer will arrive and whatever will be, will be!
What squash are you planting this year? Old stand-by's or something new???
Some I have grown before and some are new.
Cocozelle Itallian zuke new
Black Beauty zuke new
Fordhook zuke old
Grey zuke new
Yellow Scallop old
Yellow Straightneck old
Tatume Summer squash new
Have you grown any of the ones that are new for me?
I love Black Beauty!!! Grew it for the first time 2 years ago, then again last year, and have it on the agenda for this year, too. It's not only tasty, but especially beautiful and seems to have a longer shelf-life than most zukes. I love the dark contrast to the light colored scallops on a relish tray.
Now you have me anxious to get them started, but I think it's still a tad early for me if I'm not going to be able to give them grow light space. I may just start them a few weeks in advance, then rely on direct sunlight until they can go to ground. I have plenty of seeds, so I can try this as Plan A, and still have seeds left to Direct Seed if this plan doesn't work.
PS - Whatever will you do with all that squash??? Do you just grow one or two of each, or ???
Yes, just a couple of each. I still have lots like that and I give away the extra. I think that is why God blesses my garden.
Yes, it sounds like you will have oodles! I only grow about 2 zukes and 4 patty pans, and that's plenty for me. I don't generally get enough to feed many, but I do give away alot of seedlings, and tomatoes, of course. If I had the space, though...and the time, I do believe I'd get even more carried away!
If I had much room I'd work myself to death. LOL I am going to be gardening with a friend at his house this year. Looking forward to it.
That's nice! I have a helper that year, and that is a real bonus. It's fun to work with someone, and it's nice to have another set of hands - even though I have to watch hers carefully as last summer she ripped out several rows of peas, then then the melon bed. This year she's only allowed to work outside when I'm home - and nearby for questions.
I'm still going to (try to) wait another couple of weeks to start my squash, but it sure isn't easy!
Waiting is the hardest part of gardening!!!
Yes, it is...though weeding runs a close second!!! LOL!
Right now I'm trying to dispell the demons. First the mice in the basement that ate my first flat of tomato seedlings. Then the "whatevers" that dug up a couple of Kohlrabi seedlings. Then the Salad Burnett that I seeded and nurtured, then put out under glass - totally forgetting to remove the glass by day - Ah, steamed salad burnett babies!
Hopefully I will get all of this behind me before the season is off and running...
