Okra Blossoms

Tonto Basin, AZ

Seeded a couple dozen okras indoors in Feb and they've been in the ground for a couple of weeks. Last year I was WAY late getting okra seeds in the ground and we harvested very little, and we sure do like it. So I over compensated this year - LOL!

They're about 8" high and looking good, with add'l leaves that have developed since planting. Thing is all the plants have had bloom buds for at least a week, but they aren't opening. Night time temps high 40s - low 50s, days 60's and 70's. So what's the deal here? Still jest a tetch cool for them?

They are normally slow to open and it is still a bit cool but you are way ahead of the growing curve. Which cultivar are you growing this year?

Clemson spineless, I think. The seeds were from two dried pods. It's pretty pointless to be this early, because they won't do anything until it gets pretty warm. But that kind of thing happens when I get bored in the winter

They like it pretty hot. I had them growing and flowering in Houston in August, if that helps any.

They love HOT weather. It's still a tad too cool for them. They go like gangbusters in the dead of summer when it's 90º - 100º+.

It's just too soon, I guess. Ah, well , , , ,

Hey Frank ~ maybe the okra blossoms can be battered and fried?
