I just picked up Antigonon Leptopus (Coral Vine) at my local greenhouse. Since I live in zone 6, I am planning on planting it in a large pot and letting it climb on a treillis, then cutting it back and overwintering inside near a south facing window.
Has anyone tried growing it in a pot before? I understand it can get quite large in the gound.
Thanks.
Coral Vine
When I first got mine I kept it potted. There was a recent thread where many in AZ were growing assorted coral vines in pots. If you were able to provide warm winter protection, you might get a jump on the growth. Right now mine, which is in ground has not even sprouted yet.
Thanks, it is now in my greenhouse. But I shut it down in the fall and keep everything overwinter in the house. My hibiscus have been doing great inside and I get blooms all winter long.
I would want to prune the coral vine hard before I bring it in. Do you think that would be a problem?
Antigogon leptopus needs to be frequently pruned to keep it under control.
It likes to be in full sun, in well drained soil. It is very drought tolerant and should be watered sparingly.
Mine has never been so rampant as to need pruning but I am sure that would not be a problem.
First year on the GH this winter here. I was delighted to see a Manettia cordifolia really taking off. I expect it will bloom early as a result. That is why I would think your coral vine would do well in the GH. I may dig mine up in the fall and try that too. Good idea ~ thanks!
Well, it is in the greenhouse because we are expecting 38F tonight, but hopefully I can put it out on the deck late this spring and get some blooms this fall. But if your weather is not hot enough in TX, I wonder if it will ever bloom for me!:)
It does fine here, just blooms late in summer and into fall as it sprouts later when warm. Guaranty it will bloom under your care. I'll see if I can find that thread where others are growing them potted if you care to read it.
