When to plant 4 O'Clock tubers

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

When should I plant my four o'colck tubers that I ordered this spring? I had some tubers that I planted afew years ago but I ordered them very late and got them in the ground late too that year. They were really, really sprouted by that time. These have not even started growing yet.

I"ve never had the tubers, just seeds.... though i do have a few that survive here around my foundation... I'm a zone+ colder than you and mine have not started yet... usually April -- oh - it is april...

I'd think if you get them in the ground before they start growing... they would just do it when they were ready.... if your ground is workable .... were there any sort of 'directions' for planting them?

No directions. I know how to plant them. I just wondered if it was too early. We can still have frost here until May 10th.

i still think they will start growing when they are ready... not necessarily after you plant them.
as long as the ground does not freeze, they will be OK.

Like i mentioned... i have tubers that survive here in zone5a, along my foundation.

Last spring I wanted to have four o'clocks in two new spots that I didn't have them. The plants had already gotten pretty tall, over afoot tall already from seed. And then when I dug to transplant I saw that they had big taproots already. So they were already making tubers. They transplanted really easily. Looked really bad for two days and then just perked right up and continued growing

I usually have the Magenta|Fuchsia ones... yellow never impressed me.
this year i'm trying Custard & Cream.

I just buy the mixed colors. My favorites are the broken colored ones. My least favorite are white. In fact I usually start pulling the white ones and throwing them out as soon as they start to flower. I think the most common color is yellow but I have two shades of yellow. A very light colored yellow and a much deeper yellow color.

i think i'd like the deeper color. the one I had was a very light yellow and bloomed much later, so i never really got any seeds.

I did find one Broken Colors, it was hidden amongst the magentas one year.

In my garden the broken colors just pop up here and there. I always foreget to gather the seeds though I mean to do it each year.

Maybe that light yellow one that didn't bloom until later was the same kind I had. On another thread I was talking about how they didn't bloom until two weeks before the fall frost for me.That plant was a light yellow color, so maybe that was my problem.

Mere -- to me, what a disappointment. I mean, you get 4-O'C's for the blooms not the foliage.
