CLOSED: Need ID Help

Provincetown, MA

New bird to us. Our guess is an immature male (because of red-orange growing on neck) Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Another view will follow on thread. Any tips?

Hi Mass, It's a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker

Congrats on the new bird!

Both pictures are very nice. Here in south Lousiana we usually have lots of yellow-bellied sapsuckers in winter. But not a single one this past winter. I looked for them several days. I guess it is the acres of woods being lost to sprawling subdivisions.

I didn't see any, either. I think they just went extra far south this year.

This one visited my backyard (near Houston) at the end of January.

Then he decided to drink a little Loquat tree sap. He carved on my tree for three days, left it dripping sap and never showed up again. I don't care. I was thrilled to see the bird in action and Loquat trees grow like weeds.

Pretty bird! But what a mess it can make.
