Can You Teach a Dog to Guard?

Let's assume the dog is in the house, or the yard. Can you, as a matter of training, teach a dog to guard? I mean against an intruder? Not just me personally, but their yard or house?. I don't mean a dog that attacks anything they encounter.

My casual experience is that it depends on the dog in terms of personal protection. Some of mine did it naturally, and I made no effort to teach it. Some of my dogs would immediately stand between me and a stranger, just as an example.

Can you train for "Bark at any stranger who comes into the yard" for example. I am not trying to get into a train to attack type of thing. I am just talking deterrence barking etc.

P.S. Am I the only one who finds more mature dogs from rescue to be more protective, because perhaps they've seen harder times than the ones we've raised as pups?

You can imagine the scenario that prompted this question.
