Sandhill Crane Chicks

Lakeland, FL

Hi, wanted to share two chicks with everyone. They were seen at Circle B Reserve on 24 Mar 10. Locals told me they were hatched two days earlier.

Do crane just have one or two offspring?

Awww so precious!!!! I'll bet their wonderful parents.

Thanks so much for posting it here!

They usually lay a few eggs, but they are both very good parents, so this may be a couple (male and female) where both eggs hatched and survived. Im not sure if they will both make it though, lots and lots of gators a few feet away from these chicks already.

OMG! Such cuties and they're all so small and fragile. I do hope that old guy doesn't catch any of these young chicks. The cranes and mama snowy are beautiful too. Thank you so much for the wonderful pictures. Hope you'll have an opportunity to revisit this area for more photos in the near future.

I took my pictures at Lake Martin near Lafayette, LA. The rookery also hosted Roseate Spoonbills, which made a fabulous clatter by snapping their beaks. Unfortunately, the Roseates abandoned their nests several years ago, and have never returned. Probably human intrusion.

As the afternoon progressed, the Snowies became backlit. It was really incredible. My picture doesn't do justice to their beauty, but you can get the idea.
