I have lycoris radiata and some cannas that need to be dug and moved. When is it safe to move them? I'm presuming that the spider lilies need to be moved after they go dormant, but what about the cannas?
Digging bulbsneed advice
Yes, dormant on the Lycoris radiata, although I've moved them at different times. They survive but don't bloom as freely the coming season. After that back to normal.
On the cannas, the only way I can dig them is after new growth allows me to locate them. I prefer to remove them when the soil is wet. Digging is easier as well as the canna seems better prepared for the relocation. I must add, I received mine in the middle of summer with full foliage and although they didn't offer blooms till next summer, they survived also.
Thanks, Pod. :)
You are welcome. When you are done digging, ya wanna come dig some more? LOL Both of those can really multiply. Are you relocating or sharing at an RU?
I'm moving the spider lilies. Kinda hate to do that because they've just gotten their blooming shoes on where they are. But they need to be in front of the brugs, not behind them. You think they'll forgive me if I only move them a couple of feet?
Most of the cannas are being moved because they're dwarves and not visible, or in too much shade, etc. But I have a couple that I got at a RU that are just too big for my small yard. I will probably take those to the ET RU. But there are always dozens of cannas at most RUs. Are you looking for some?
No to the cannas but thank you. I have some no name yellow dwarfs that were given to me but have spread more than I wanted. I promised some to a DGr up north so will be digging them shortly. The Lycoris are some of the most forgiving. They will be fine when relocated. I've had some lay out on the ground for a season (dog digging) and still had them put on bloom spikes. Durable old bulbs are hard to kill.
Well, the ones I'm moving came from Old House Gardens, so they should be heirloom plants. They did take a season off before they bloomed, though. I love them so much, I'm hoping they won't mind a quick 2-foot scoot. :) Thanks for the help.
