Couple of pics - coop, ducks and guineas

Spiro, OK(Zone 7a)

I promised some pics, and although I still haven't remembered to get my camera out to the barn now that the chickens are out there, I wanted to share what I did have. This first pic is of our ducks at about 2 1/2 weeks old.

Next up is our remodeled coop - we fortified the floor and replaced all the floorboards and expanded the coop by about 35%. It's nice and roomy now!

Finally a super cute shot of my 4-year-old hanging out in the coop with what he calls "his guinea hens".

Catscan I tried to send Billy home with ZZ, you could have shared him... LOL

Love the picture and love the babies. I could watch Billy watching his chickens all day...

Awww, easy to see he loves his girls! I love your coop. It's super nice. What kind of ducks do you have?

Spiro, OK(Zone 7a)

Well, the ducks...hmmm...I have yellow and I have black. LOL I really have no idea. I think the yellow/white will be standard pekin (?) ducks a la "Aflack" and the black and yellow ones are supposed to be all black, though I'm not sure about the one we call "Rorschach". He's the one on the far right in the pictures (almost out of the picture). He's got a cool pattern on his head (hence the name), he's very runty compared to the others, and he's got WAY more yellow than the other two blacks. So who knows?

Today, we're working on the area that will be the chicken yard, and after moving a billion pounds of soil to try and level it, we've decided now we're going to just adjust the bottom boards to fit with the top being level. We feel like we're just churning our wheels trying to dig/till/box blade all of the dirt. We just don't have the right equipment, and most of the folks in our house except for me have some kind of disability or just age, so it's really hard to do a lot of this stuff. So the corner posts are measured out - we'll put those in today, and in the meantime, I'm headed off to do a final run with the box blade to get this booger flattened out and pretty so I can lay down some clover for the chickens. More pics later - I'm actually grabbing the camera right now and heading down to the barn!

what kind of guinneas are they? i have 3 week old french guinneas

Spiro, OK(Zone 7a)

I'm not sure. I think they're just "brown" guineas. They are loud, slightly less messy than the ducks, and super hard to pick up. They're strong, they fight and they have BIG claws. Can't wait for them to free range and get out of my coop! (They're my mother-in-law's birds). I just found someone on Craigslist has Buff Orpingtons that are a little younger than my current flock. I REALLY wanted Buff Orpingtons, so I'm thinking of getting a few, perhaps even getting four girls and one roo, in case I want to breed them. I don't know though. I'm thinking for now, being a complete novice, I'm probably going to wait a year and see how I do before I buy any more.

You will love Buff Orpingtons, they are calm and friendly and lay big light brown egg nearly year round. They can be a bit talkative, but I consider that a plus.

I'd like to have a few.
