I really enjoyed my daffodils, and they seem to be happy since they are making bigger clumps, but I just can't wait for them to die to the ground again. They take forever and I need them out of the way. Can I dig them up and plant them in a pot until the leaves die back? ...that's quite a few pots and soil tho.... Is there anything else to do with them?
What can I do with daffodils?
leave them in the ground.. save your energy for something else in the yard...lol...
while in the ground as the leaves die down gather them together and fold them over in half.. then bundle them together with a rubber band... the leaves will still produce energy for the bulbs blooming next year but they are lower and not so in the way.. what ever you plant near them or around them will soon hide the bundles of leaves.. then after they turn brown all the way just clip them and they are already in a handy form to toss or compost
Absolutely agree, if you dig them now the foliage will die prematurely and you won't have many blooms next spring. As ugly as they might be, let the foliage die naturally.
Perhaps you might interplant another bulb that will hide the uglies. A friend has a row of daffs spanning the front curb. As that foliage dies down, a row of Crinum bulbs start putting on a fresh green foliage and they will deliver blooms a bit later in early summer. It makes the daffs more attractive.
a second thought
wait till this fall them dig them up ... replant them in pots ... then counter sink the pots back where you had them.. then after blooming you can pull the pots up and go from there.... more work??? Yeah it is but youve got a clean slate aftder you enjoy the blooms.. Me... Id do what Pod says...lol..
Actually, you have a great idea if there aren't too many daffs. Good thinking!
hey ..after working 30 yrs as a florist I did learn a few things...lol.. but it is more work... lots more to start with..
None of my beds are that well manicured so the their leaves don't create a distraction. How about planting some annuals near them right after the blooms start to fade that will cover them.
