Large updated seed list for trade!!!
Dave,
In your post regarding cabbage you have [Cabbage, 'Red' and 'Niger Head' (Tete Noir)]. Could you please remove the "Niger Head' as that is a derogatory, racist use of language. The correct French translation for 'Tete Noir' is 'Black Head' indicating the dark colour of the cabbage. I would appreciate this edit. Thanks.
Joydie in Canada
Hi,
I wanted to let you Joydie and all of you know that I am not racist. I just found that name of that cabbage variety in English at www.seedsearch.demon.co.uk
So if the name I found in English is not correct, it is not my fault.
David
Dave,
Hi, I'm not accusing you of being racist. I even emailed you regarding a trade. I would just like for you to edit the word...I'm Canadian of African American descent and I just don't care to see the word used. Thanks for supply the web page and I will email them directly.
Regards.
Joydie
Actually folks, the word in question is used correctly. The offensive word being referred to has two "g"s in it. The word "Niger", always capitolized, is pronounced with a soft G sound (as if you were saying J). It is the base word in many languages for "dark", "black", etc.
Like you Joydie1, I dislike the negative word you are referring to...it has no place in any society. Perhaps this one (Niger) could also be replaced tho...makes me wonder how many other folks confuse its meaning as well as its pronunciation.
Hmm...Maybe I should email that company as well, eh? It couldn't hurt for them to receive the same request several times, eh?

Hello David I am interested in your Cosmos and maybe a couple of others. Please look ta my trade list and see if I have any seeds you would be willing to trade for.
Thank you, Penny
PS: Maybe you should edit your post to say Niger Head instead of niggerhead. But if you change it to black head it will bring to mind a black head/zit! Not a very appatising veggy :-p
Isn't " niger" Latin {used to name plants} for black, re: Helleborus niger to describe the root colour ?
Yes it is Cyclamen
yes, but that's not the spelling that was used, unfortunately. I'm sure it was an innocent mistake, but I can see why joydie was asking for an edit.
Niger (NYE'GER) is the the correct pronunction. Thistle seed for bird feeders is Niger seed (which is black) the above pronunction.
I beleieve people are jumping to conclusions
I chose not to use the 'NIGGER' spelling when I reponded so I posted 'Niger' in my response....yes noir-french, niger in latin, nigra in italian etc all mean black and yes they are elements of linguistics...but 'NIGGER' is another completely different meaning and the correct name of the cabbage is 'Tete Noir' not which is and I will reiterate once again... 'Niggerhead'.
Analysis -akin to Red Cabbage 'Rouge' in French -Red Cabbage there is Black Cabbage. 'Nigggerhead' has a completely different contextual, linguistic, vernacular meaning.
I'm sure if the situation were reversed and someone posted a derogatory term refering to 'White' or Causcasion or Native American, Asian and so on there would be people offended. I merely asked that he edit his post and use the correct term for the cabbage which is 'Tete Noir'...now it isn't rocket science to figure out color the cabbage is.
There are several varieties of cabbage- white, red, savoy and a variety developed by the Chinese which is very different and many sub variants.
For those interested regarding the species of cabbage referred to as aka 'Niggerhead' is a Red Cabbage called 'Tete Noir' by the French.
Does one really have to spell out the historically how the word 'Niggerhead' came into use? How can one logistically sit back and read my original post and say that I am 'making a big deal of nothing'? In this age of consciousness, terrorist bombings and so on, how can one justify the use of the word 'Niggerhead' to describe what is in fact a RED CABBAGE. The correct name of the cabbage which is 'Tete Noir' used by the French to describe a RED CABBAGE is bad enough, but the vernacular or alias as 'Niggerhead' is totally unacceptible.
The site referred to above is the sole responsibility in terms of content of one:

Karen is the writer of books and also maintains the website with a list of distributers of seeds. Her reference to aka 'Niggerhead' and bracketing the correct name in this day and age is deplorable and that is essentially what my initial complaint is referring to.
But, citing a source in my estimation does not absolve someone from taking responsibility when they post on a website. Just edit the word 'Niggerhead' out and list it as a Red Cabbage or 'Tete Noir'. That in my estimation is not too much to ask. Thanks. I hope to see that changed and I've emailed Karen Pratt to make the change on her website as well.
I'm sorry David's thread has turned into this but I'm going to contribute. My apologies to David. I find the "N" word offensive. I also realize that people in europe don't understand its offensiveness in the same way as North Americans. I admit that when I read it, I was surprised but gave him the benefit of the doubt. Non-native english speakers don't always understand the power of certain english words (just as we wouldn't understand the nuances of their language).
I don't think David has access to a computer every day either. That may be why the word hasn't been changed yet. Please keep that in mind.
Friends....I have a confession. I already emailed Joydie last nite and apologized but really feel the need to do it here. You see, when I first posted the info that I offered I was using the reference of Joydie's post, not Davids. (His list was, in my opinion, entirely too long, and I didn't take the time to read it.) I really should've, and I also would've spoken up and corrected the usage of such a word. I messed up. All I read was her post about "Niger" being a bad word, not the spelling above in David's post. I really stand corrected. I am so sorry Joydie for what I now can see as being insolence on my part. AND, I also will write Karen Platt about this matter. (and the thing that confuses me even more...if "Niger" means 'dark', or 'black'...why is it referring to a RED cabbage, and even more so, the "nickname"? All in all, a lesson learned here.
Wanted to let y'all know that I have traded with David twice, and he is a very nice person! He does not have access to the internet except one day a week, and I'm sure will fix this when he gets a chance. He is posting from Spain, English is a second language, and as Deblynn put it, the nuances are not always there for someone using a second language. Hope this helps out, I'd hate for anyone to have hard feelings over a misunderstanding. Miscommunications happen in one's native language and are twice as likely in an International trade.
Happy gardening!
Martela
Auch C`mon People, it`s a cabbage not a person.
I think this has got a wee bit out of hand, the guy`s only trying to trade his PRE_NAMED SEED! It`s not as if he named it himself.
Sorry if I have offended anybody BUT!!!
There a hundreds of plants witth the name niger IE Hellebores, cabbage etc, do a word search
Edna
Hiya
I would love to trade seed with you (even the niger head!) see what you see on my page at
www.gardenweb.com/members/exch/edna
I`ll get back to with my list of want`s when I get time to look them over good, and if you find some you want from me
Edna
Edna,
Get real. If it was a derogatory, offensive word referring to a Scott to call a plant you too would be offended!! He listed it as "Niggerhead" not "nigerhead". Read the post again. When he posted this list earlier in the season he listed the plant as Tete Noir aka 'Niggerhead'.
I'm sorry, English as a second language or otherwise is no excuse. The word "NIGGER" is universal in every country globally everyone knows what NIGGER is and means. We are not talking about each languages construction for the word black...I'm referring to the use of the word "NIGGERHEAD". I've travelled in many countries in Europe, Asia, South East Asia and so on and they sure do know and can use the word NIGGER when they want too and when they see you!!
People are we getting the real message here.
Please read.
"Have seeds for trade:
'Chink' (Chinese) Cabbage
'Spic' (Spanish) Cross Vine
'Wap' (Italian) Parsley
'Aryan' (White) perennial Flag
'Newfie' (Newfoundland) Potatoes
'Frog' (French) Tarragon
'Squaw" (Indian) Paintbrush
email me if interested in an exchange."
Need I go on to make my point? If you live in South American and English is not your first language, do you know what a 'Chink' is or a 'Spic', you sure do!! We just don't do or say that let alone post it on a webpage and yet I just did. Does that make it acceptible because someone uses those terms as an alias? I think NOT!!! I'm still standing my ground on having the word "NIGGERHEAD" edited out.
I encourge people to email the holder of the webpage, David who posted this list and David who is the webpage manager of Dave's Garden Web to have the word 'NIGGERHEAD" edited out. I emailed Dave of Gardenweb and have received no action or response.
Do you think just maybe he hit the 'g' one to many times and really people let up on the poor guy. Yea it may be a BAD word, but it is only what you make of it. I personally do not like the word. But please just give the guy a break.
I do not mean to offend anyone. GIVE HIM THE BENEFITE OF THE DOUBT, HE MADE A MISTAKE, SO GIVE IT A REST. I am sure he will edit his post.
he probably got scared off. All David is guilty of is copying exactly what was somewhere else.
Do you any of you folks (apart from Edna)want to have this "Tete Noire", or not? I just wanted to exchange seeds with anyone interested. I am so sorry for what has happened. To tell the truth, I could not believe that there was so much to say about a word I copied from a list.
Let me tell you a couple of things:
First, I must thank you very much for the sound comments from some people. Even though "nigger" may be a racist term, I was talking about a cabbage. I hope "Tete Noire" did not get offended.
Second, discussing about why to call a red cabbage "Black" has no sense. That happens often with plants. For instance, there is a variety of Kohl Rabi which is called "White Vienna" and it is not white but green. By the way, if "Tete Noire" is much more similar to black than red. It is really dark, although it is not black.
Third. Sorry, but I did not have a clue of what "Chink" or "Spic" mean. English is a foreign language for me. I am not familiar with bad words in my mother tongue, either! My wife is German, she knows English and did not know the meaning of these words. I am not the only one. I feel none of you should think those words like that are known in the entire world.
Fourth. As a Christian I do not want any people to get offended. I want to follow Jesus´ steps. So I apologize if any of you got offended by that word. I will delete it from my list. Let´s be friends and have a positive talking again.
May God bless all of you.
David_V
David...I think you made an honest mistake. I personally thought you laid a bit hard on the g key. I mess up typing all the time. Most of the time I catch myself...but not always. I say Niger, or a variation of black in other forms. I can see how the other person was upset. However...if this man is using a second language...give him the benefit of the doubt. I happen to be white (anglo)/and cherokee.......but, here in the US...we are mostly a melting pot. Many you think are full white, black, brown, whatever.....actually are a mix. Lets just love one another .....and get on with the short life we have here on earth. I hate the N word too, and will NOT use it. It makes me uncomfortable. I have been called all kinds of names like honkey...it isnt the word..its the tone, or the hate that goes with it that hurts. Personally I like everybody who is cool....I hate racism from any color of person...it is senseless. I was raised in a racist home. I changed, my children learn from me...and we teach acceptance, and love. That is the bottom line. If we have never made a mistake...get on this poor man's case. If not...leave him be. Ive never heard a racist remark made here. I hope I never do. That is not Christian anyway. Oh, and Im from Texas too, and thats how I feel.
Well said Kelly. Now, shall we end this thread and move on? David, will email you about some trades, k?
