Bad ole' rose people, bad! :) (I like your sense of humor.)

Okay, as to the watering, try to keep it off the leaves. Roses are prone to have a fungus called black spot and keeping the leaves damp makes the fungas very happy. Water in early morning is ideal. Roses are fairly heavy water drinkers, so you'll need to water fairly often when first planted and in the hottest summer months. Don't fertilize when first planted but water in with root stimulator. Once the plants get the roots established, I feed monthly. I use Bayer Rose food and have excellent luck with that. It's fairly inexpensive and can be found at Lowe's. If you start seeing black spots on the leaves surrounded by yellowing of the leaf, it's fungal. I spray with a mix of milk and water. I think it was Josephine (Frostweed) who gave me this wonderful bit of advice. It works well, just don't spray it on when the sun it out and it's really hot or you'll fry the leaves. I've given up on Hybrid Tea roses because they're just such a pain to take care of. I was constantly spraying, feeding, weeding, pruning, etc. I now stick with old roses and Knockouts. They're kind of "Roses for the lazy gardener" which is definitely the category I fit into.

Hope this is some help.

Cool... Thanks..

Somebody else suggested rosemary companion planting to ward off the deer.. Tall fence just ain't financially feasible this year. I was thinking berry netting - it's thin enough to keep the sun in, and maybe the deer off. Always kept the birds of my mom's red raspberry bushes..

Milk & water.. really! 50 50 mix? That's a sweeeet idea!

I put about a cup of milk in a gallon of water.

I'd read about the rosemary for deer too. I don't know if it works, but rosemary is a lovely plant so even if it doesn't deter the deer, it's worth growing. I have both the trailing and bush type rosemary. The trailing one is in a rock garden planted at streetside and is one of only 3 plants there that survived the snow and prolonged freeze.

I've got two bushes growing of rosemary.. the trailing kind.. About 5 ft from the rose.. :) Apparently it's not close enough.
They're pretty enough.. I'll get more, and try to plant closer to the rose bush... *only I'll trim the new ones better.. my old ones have gone wacko and got like a 3ft haircut last weekend*

never said you didn't.

I'm sorry if you were upset... not my intention.

OK, well....sniff, sniff......apology accepted. =~) Just remember, we rose people usually don't come out to play until the afternoon. We are delicate beauties (snort!) after all.

(above stated in good fun mode)
