Can crocus change their color?

Indianapolis, IN

About five years ago I purchased a bag of 30 purple crocus from Lowe's. I planted them along the banks of a small creek at the back of my yard. They all came up the next spring and bloomed but they were all a golden yellow in color. I was not happy with the mislabeling but they did well and bloomed earlier than the purple & white striped crocus on the other side of the creek. They have multiplied over the years and last year for the first time, one of the 100 or so blooms was larger and purple in color. This spring I now have 6 purple blooms within the clumps of yellow blooms. Can crocus change their color over time? Will they eventually all become purple?

I would guess a squirrel could have moved one of the purple ones to the other side? As far as I know, no they do not change color. They are what they are and cannot change. The other idea is that some of the bulbs just did not divide or bloom well until now. Some of the bulbs sold are too small to bloom right away.
Lowes is bad for having mislabled things.

They could also be seedlings, we have had a lot of trouble with that and now use pre emergent herbicide on everything and mow off the flowers of the native bulbs if we don't have a seed buyer first. We have had major dust devils here that move seeds around too.

I know I get crocus seedlings in my lawn. I have never, ever planted a crocus in the lawn but I have them growing there.
