This morning there was left over cooked oatmeal (Quaker Oats cooks in one minute kind). It was cooked in water, no milk, butter or B. sugar, just plain. Woud it have been ok to give the chicks a few spoons of it?
I put just one top, greens and a bit of strawberry, in the box today. They went wild over it. I don't want to give them foods other than their feed it it's too early or not good for them. The chickies and I would be grateful if you had some suggestions as to what they could nibble on. They come by their love of goodies honestly.
Oh, and what exactly is "mash" ....is it warm and cooked, wet, what does it consist of? Chickies would like to have more food experiences.
Thanks!
Left over cooked oatmeal?
I'm sure oatmeal would be fine as a treat. We need to remember that the chick feed is formulated to be complete nutritionally and anything we add essentially "dilutes" the diet.
Thanks, porkpal, it's tempting to give them other treats just to watch how wild they get LOL

I feed my girls oatmeal on a regular basis, I also add two tablespoons of sugar to it, they love it and I make three cups for eighteen birds. They see me comming I put it down and run for the hills...LOL They Love it.
I feed mine left over oatmeal all the time too. Oatmeal is a typical breakfast at out house, and I just give them what ever the kids leave.
I give mine nutritional snacks almost every day.. in moderation.. :)
You can use chick starter with some warm water to make mash.. I usually put a little yogurt in once in a while.. (good for the gut) sometimes fresh garlic.. or scrambled eggs..
I have a bag of layer pellets Cody got by accident.. they won't touch pellets.. so I use it for mash.
I had to laugh ZZ's, a guy from the feed store told me I was crazy when I told him my girls do not like pellets. My girls won't touch it, they love the crumbles. So glad to know I'm not crazy, and someone else has spoiled birds also...LOL. Yogurt, I heard that was really good if you wanted to keep a slim chick...LOL. Hay.
OMG Hay.. it's a bag of garbage if I don't make mash! They would probably rather starve.. :)
mine won't touch pellets ether :-)
mine won't touch pellets.. rather starve as well. BUT they won't touch yogurt either.. rather starve than eat it as well... i may not hide it well enough tho.
{{feed store guy told me i was crazy, all chickens eat pellets... mine were just spoiled., I just sweetly asked him if he wished for me to starve & neglect my chickens just to prove they wouldn't eat them or nicely take the pellets away & give them crumbles after a day, he just grumbled that women were difficult.}}
Hey Greykyttyn, tell him only women chicken are difficult. Human women, you've only gotta learn what makes em purr...LOL. Hay.
doubtful he ever figured that one out as grumpy as he is
lol....never seen a chicken eat a pellet. But Hay's on to something....;)
Mine eat pellets. The chicks all change from chick crumbles to layer pellets without a hitch. I guess they just follow eachothers' example?
Hey there Grownut, I say if your gonna have a harem, ya better figure em out...LOL.
Sorry Greykyttyn, but I agree, I don't like grumpy old men, or women. I have a saying and I always told my children...KISMIF...KEEP IT SIMPLE MAKE IT FUN, Life is to short to go and other route. How are the babies doing? What cuties you had.
well I've got pictures but its been a horrid week already so I have yet to get them up there. I'll try to get them up this week around everything else so I don't lose them. If not over the weekend then. I need to post pics of my new feed store chicks too!
LOL Haystack.. I have KISS it... Keep It Simple Stupid! Which I rarely do. LOL
Oh my.....Hay.....I would simply have not had the harem...you're a better man than I, Gunga Din, ;)
Rather hooked on ZeeZ' approach...for all the good it does me, heh...
The chicks got all the left over oatmeal this morning. I put it in a plastic bowl and held it for them. Bob, of course it would be him, jumped right in and tried to scratch, whaaaaaaa, he fell over, stuck in thick oatmeal, screaming and flapping his wings. I picked him up and he ran right back in the bowl. Most of them tired to scratch in it but ALL of them gobbled it up, hilarious to watch! I .love. my chicks!!
Edited because sometimes I can't spell FS.
