I had a request out of the blue from someone in Malaysia (southwest Asia) requesting a trade for Cherry tomato seeds. I asked if there were any other seeds they were interested in, but the person wasn't sure what would be suitable. From what I found, they are near a rain forest and the temps are 70's to 90's year round. The person offered to try to locate any seeds (vegetables or flowers) I wanted in return. Any suggestions? I know there are at least one or two missionaries on DG, that have traveled to some of the smaller countries, but I can't remember who.
Also, what do I need to know about sending seeds to another country?
Thanks for any and all input,
Robin
Need seed ideas to send to Malaysia ASAP
I believe sending seed is OK. It's soil they are mostly concerned about. I'd leave the seed in the packet.
Many American vegetables do poorly in thee tropics. Where I am, right now, there is only a five degree temperature drop at night, and the nights are 12-13 hours long, 11 hours at their shortest. Just too hot, the plants don't get respite.
Maybe some Swiss Chard, basil, cucumber, cushaw and pie pumpkin, watermelon, any winter squash, hot peppers, eggplant, Yard long bean, melons. corn. Big tomatoes don't set fruit very well, and cherry tomatoes are a winter crop.
lol, that enough? I've either grown these myself, or seen them locally.I don't know about lettuce, someone is hydroponically growing Summer Bibb. Most lettuce does poorly, bolts, and I don't know about onions.
the perennial climbing New Zealand Spinach is OK, regular spinach wilts and dies when it's about a week old, too hot.
OK, there's a start!
Get those people to join either DG I'd love to communicate with them, and see how they do with their tropical gardening.
I have no idea what you might like in return, you can google Malaysia plants? Orchids? lol, but they might need a certificate.
Melissa
Thanks Melissa. Just what I need to know.
I invited the person to join DG.
I would think okra, cowpeas, melons, squash and some varieties of beans would do well as they originated in the tropics
Oh, just in time, I'm headed to the store and then post office to send off this first few packs.!
Thank you for the additional suggestions.
I sent cherry tomatoes, bright lights swiss chard and yellow crookneck squash. May find some more to send a little later. I don't know if this person is male or female, or if they are growing anything right now, or just starting out. They contacted me through email off of Local Harvest and asked if I had any extra cherry tomato seeds, and offered me seed in return, if I told them what I was looking for.
:)
Now I have a warm fuzzy feeling! The seeds arrived in Malaysia in just 6 days, not the expected 2 weeks. The recipient is a science teacher and lives in a small village. Doesn't grow many vegetables, but has orchids and roses and a few other tropicals.
