help 101 on bromeliads

Vandalia, IL

I have 3 varieties..solid green,,green and yellowish striped ,and 2-tone pink striped. all are in pots like plastic folgers cans...all have pups and are a year old since I bought them..they all are about the size of volley balls, including pups...when should I expect these to flower,,or should I be encouraging them with something? should I keep dividing these,,for the health of the plant? Im getting to believe Ill never see a flower! finally,,if I plant them outside this summer,,are these picky about being moved? any comments will be appreciated..thank-you

A photo or a name would be of some help, so we know what your taking about.

A photo from the top would help. Judging from the stolons and variegation, I'm guessing it's something like Neoregelia Fireball. These stoloniferous types are often grown in a hanging basket of sorts. If it's a Neo the flowers stay in the center on a short stalk. They are grown for the foliage although they oftern redden up when flowering. Look at www.bsi.org for cultural info.
