I got 6 chicks from TSC last Friday. 4 are black sex link pullets and 2 are red comets.

Awww look at that expression! I love em! I'm thinkin I need to get a batch of pullets for just layers.. these pics make it sooo tempting!

Two excellent choices, Your gonna love em. Congrats to you and your choice. Hay.

Thanks. I would have liked to have had 6 sexlinks but there were only 4 pullets in a tank full of roos. I hope I got RC pullets.

If I may be so bold as to guess.. the RC in the second pic looks pullet to me. The one with the darker yellow head in the first pic might be roo... This is JUST a guess! Compare tails.. might help.... I'm guessing the darker one has less tail.. that's what makes my roo indicater start to blink a little. LOL

Roos have smaller tails when they are young? Does this hold true in all but the tailess breeds?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

It's been my observation with a lot of breeds that absence of tail feathers means roo.. not all breeds though.
Seramas are impossible for me to sex when they are tiny, but they mature so fast, it becomes apparent very soon.. Some bantams are hard to guess by feather growth too..
I think it's really fun to guess.. I've got to get a pic of my method of guessing according to wing feather growth.. it's too hard to explain in text.

Here is a good link for wing feathers.. doesn't show what I look for.. but it's close.

Now that you mention it.. breeds like Silkie, Top Hats, etc.. I'm lost there..

Good demonstration, thanks.

I'll have to take a look.

Cajun for me, it's not the flights and coverts that show up so different, it's the shape.. A lil Roo's wing looks like an L just the bottom feathers get long first.. very hard to explain in text.. a pullet's wing will be more of a >

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

How long does that hold true?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

It seems to be most pronounced at like 4 to 6 days old.. I'm not sure how long it lasts.. but the first couple weeks the wings and tails of the roos are less developed.... Time is the best indicator! This is fun to me though.

Mine may be past that point. The game chicks are looking "ugly" now. Between their baby down and real feathers. they are mangey looking. LOL
