mailing bulbs???

Dunmor, KY(Zone 6a)

I need to mail some gladiolus bulbs. Can I mail them in a large buble envelope or will i have to have a box?

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

ought to be fine in an envelope. i'd use some newspaper to cushion.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I have mailed in a env. before, but I surround them with cardboard.

only other thing dixie make sure the person you're sending to knows you are mailing in an envelope. some people absolutely get fired up about plants in an envelope. lol

Belton, TX

I would be one of those....even in a bubble envelope, small bulbs can be damaged....I don't mind if the box is sent parcel post, but have had too many poor experiences with bulbs in envelopes...broken, flattened, and smashed. That's enough for me...yes, I would definitely ask, Dixie!

Same here ASk or it could lead to negitive feedback. I personally dont mind if its a couple and well paded on both ends with cardboard but by then you might as well have used a small plain box. AND NEVER SHIP IN A ENVIE IN THE HOT SUMMER!! IT WILL BE MUSH!!

I'd mail in a box.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

lol. i knew you box people were out there.

however if your trader says it's ok to send in an envelope i think it's fine. i have mailed bulbs, dl's, perennials, rooted cuttings successfully in a bubble mailer for a whole lot less. these were usually instances where i was trading one plant that i wouldn't pay 5 bucks for in the first place. and i had extras to spare in case the p.o. did destroy the pkg. i sent. but i have had total success so far. another thing i do is i ask my trader to let me send the way i want and let me SEND FIRST. if it's bad then the deal is off. as long as you make people comfortable regarding their money/plants being safe most people work with you. and remember that the post office can tear up boxes too. i'ma grinnin'.

Thanks everyone. Luckly the bulbs made it to my trade partner in great shape! Thanks for everyones input.

You got it, mamajack ;0
I would rather be safe than sorry, I guess. You can ship a small box first class mail for almost as cheap as an envelope.

Fate, TX(Zone 8a)

but almost doesn't cut it for me lakeside and i guess it's fun for me to take a risk every now and again. i hate spending money needlessly on postage. i believe i could ship you any plant you name.......if it's under 13 oz. in an envelope and i'm bettin' you'd be happy. once i sent plants.......ee's in one of those 3.00 non padded envelopes. true.....i asked my trader to let me experiment and she did. understand........the envy method for me is a way i can trade for just one plant. i either like to trade big or one plant. envy plants may look a little less pristine than box plants but for me the root is the thing. i can grow a new top and be happy doing it when it only cost me 2 bucks or under. for 5 plus dollars i expect a little more.
