Will shrimp make eggs taste bad?

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

We had a shrimp boil yesterday and have lots of leftovers. If I blend them up shell and all is it ok to give it to the chickens? Also Im worried it may give the eggs an odd flavor. Anyone have any experience with this?
Thanks!

I worry the same thing about my chickens eating mice. I think a shrimp flavored egg will taste better than a mouse flavored one, but so far I haven't discerned a mouse flavor to our eggs. Good luck.

I could find better things to do with shrimp, than feed it to chickens.

We had some friends cancel at the last min so we cooked about 20lbs of shrimp and we have way too much to keep.

Lodi, United States

When I lived in the UK, the chicken smelled like fish as it roasted, because they fed them fish meal. But I never noticed that the eggs tasted fishy.

LOL I would have been there for Shrimp...Lucky chickens

Caren peel and freeze them for the next pot of Gumbo or Jambalaya. Egg salad with chopped shrimp is one of DH favs for left over shrimp

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Thanks guys...They will get some of it but I do have some put up in the freezer for a Jambalaya :)

The shells would be rich in calcium and would probably add deeper color to the yolks for a while. The only thing, I have ever detected in the eggs was onion, but luckily they don't eat that much that often.

Richmond, TX

Since you mentioned colouring yolks, how long does it take for the feed to change the yolks and how long does the effect last?

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

It takes about three days and lasts for several more.

Richmond, TX

Did I hear that beets would cause redder yolks? I'd like to try it.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Beets will also cause very red poo.

Jyl, do you remember that thread about the Garlic/eggs test? I can't remember who it was, or what the name of the thread was.. but the wife secretly knew about the taste test and blew it out of the water by putting garlic salt on the eggs or something?? It was a great thread..

Anyone else? Who was that??

Williamsburg, MI(Zone 4b)

I don'temember it but t must have been funny. t takes uite a bit of anything to flavor the eggs.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I searched forever.. Here it is.. It's sooo long and only one lil part about the taste test.. but it was priceless for sure!

duh.. edited to add link

Elleisn,

"I worry the same thing about my chickens eating mice. I think a shrimp flavored egg will taste better than a mouse flavored one, but so far I haven't discerned a mouse flavor to our eggs."

That's because mice taste just like chickens!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Screamin funny Gwendalou!!

Gridley, IL

Hehehe that was a great thread! i enjoyed that completly and its kool to add some faces to the names i see in here!

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Well, I haven't noticed any shrimpy tasting eggs yet lol! They were not as interested in it as I thought they would bec36 but they still ate a good bit of it. Only one serving thank you kind of thing.

Denver, CO

I thought it was only frogs and snakes that tasted like chicken, I didn't know mice did too!!

I'd freeze those shrimp down to the last little tail. LOL I sure do miss fresh seafood. We have a few in the freezer and when we eat any, the hogs get the peelings. Only thing I would worry about was a chicken getting a "picker" hung in their throat.

We go shrimping durning the summer and fill up our freezers, about this time of year we have shrimp boils to start freeing up space for this summers catch. We usually have crawfish boils as well but they are so expensive this year we are sticking to the free shrimp ;)

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Can't remember the last time I ate crawfish. *sigh*

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

I wish I'd seen this before, because I've fed mine shrimp and noticed nothing in the way of the flavor. Those girls went after the shrimp like white on rice, too. Cajun, I had crawfish last week. It's still about the best thing in the world.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Thats it, you all are not fair..We dont have a seafood restaurant here, there is not a ocean in the desert, and now I am craving seafood....

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Then you wouldn't like me to tell you about the fried shrimp I had down at the Kemah marina. I won't torture you with details about the delicate breading, the fresh, fat shrimp, the view of the sailboats out on Galveston Bay. That would be cruel.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

My Mother grew up in Galveston when I was a kid we would go back every year... I loved it...

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

I haven't been to Kemah since Ike hit... Has everything recovered over there? We had thought about going to Galveston last summer but decided to go to Sam Rayburn instead.
We miss Moody Gardens and Slitter-bon (sp?). Maybe we will come this summer...

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I'm cookin shrimp tonight. Out of the freezer but beggars can't be choosy when they live in the mountains of eastern Ky.

Gridley, IL

Cajunin Wal mart has frozen crawfish (cajun seasoning) We buy them all the time! Yumm

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

YOU ALL JUST QUIT!!! that is so not nice... If I could know how to cook it, I would almost venture to buy some at the local supermarket..

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Ahem. Boil water. Add shrimp. Eat.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Don't forget the crab boil. Zatterains is the only way to go for down da bayuh taste!

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

The secrete well, our secrete is to boil them in the Zatterains then when you take them out use a squirt bottle with a sm bottle of liquid Zatterains and the rest lemon juice... Spray liberally with the mix let them sit for a few minutes then pig out!

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Ok most importantly how long to boil??

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

Til they're pink -- 2 - 5 minutes, maybe.

South West, LA(Zone 9a)

Yes, less is more with shrimp... They will continue to cook even after you remove them from the water.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I added another pack of shrimp to the sauce last night and we enjoyed shrimp spaghetti for supper again. It was better the second time. Always is.
