Snow again

Caddo Mills, TX(Zone 8a)

Somebody please tell me why?????????????????????? lol

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

Argh! Other than covering tomatoes and other vegetable plants, should we do anything else?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Why?? Because it's Texas! LOL

Cover the pipes and leave the faucets dripping!

Caddo Mills, TX(Zone 8a)

Dfwdennis
I brought in all of my containers. Other than covering your plants that is all that can be done.

Arlington, TX

Ah Hellaciousness! I did not plant any veggies yet and now I am glad. Still the wind is howling and I am shivering inside today. I have nothing to cover for tomorrow night, just praying it is not so cold my potted plants suffer a great set back. Note to self...do not complain when it gets really hot out there.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

I put five little tomato plants in last weekend. Of course the 10 day outlook looked fine then.

I did not realize it was already down to 36 degrees until about 10 minutes ago and had to rush out covering my poor babies with mason jars and such. I wanted something clear so they could warm up quick when the sun comes out tomorrow.

It's only supposed to get down to 32 degrees so my lettuce, spinach and carrot seedlings will be fine. And I think all the flower buds that have popped will make it through just fine. If it actually snows before it gets down to freezing close to the ground, the snow should help insulate plants.

Arlington, TX

Is it going to be colder Sunday night than tonight or warmer, please say warmer.
C

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

They are saying warmer Sunday night for McKinney right now. Hopefully that does not change.

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

We planted our tomatoes a few weeks ago. We bought from an old tomato grower who just grows them for fun now. They were $.50 each and 18" tall with blooms, so we planted them in a raised bed as soon as we got home. Maggi put 1/2 PVC hoops over the bed and then put plastic over them every night. We left the plastic on them today to hold any heat they have built up. They should be OK if it only gets down to the forecasted 33. We should have tomatoes before the first of May. I always like to plant early but that means protection, so I try to work that out as I am planting.

Arlington, TX

I agree Ken, I was just too busy this year. All my work outside has been repotting and repairing, so I have put off planting maters and such.
C

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, they are forecasting snow for us now. Ugh! Thankfully, my maters aren't in the ground yet. All that's out there is taters (covered), onions, carrots, lettuce, and one lone cabbage survivor. Anything else is just gonna have to tough it out! I noticed a few pea seeds are starting to germinate. We planted those this past Wednesday.

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

It is coming down pretty good right now. Yeah. :(

Wells, TX(Zone 8b)

no snow here but I dragged all my seedling boxes into the house just in case..a total of 10 and my min greenhouse are in my kitchen... I sure dont want to lose them after all the work Id put in to them already

Arlington, TX

Snow on the grass in Arlington too! Not quite enough to make a snowman, just enough to make a snow woman cold!
C

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Kind of relieved that I didn't plant anything tender yet. Just had to move the same pots in like I have been doing all winter. It was so nasty cold and windy out that there was no one at the park (including me!)

Caddo Mills, TX(Zone 8a)

Well it hasn't stopped snowing yet. Yuck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Arlington, TX

Gee, maybe I will lose power again!

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

We have a nice dusting of snow, looks pretty on the mulch, hopefully this will be the last one for this year.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

It does look pretty, Josephine, it's just slowing down my veggies & flowers! LOL Not to mention it's so cold and WINDY out there!

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Catlady's DD posted on facebook, what kind of wackey weed has Maggi been smoking when she read that Maggi posted there was going to be snow. I just hope Pam's DD has been smoking some this morning when she looks out the window, otherwise she will be thinking she is loosing her mind, snow the first day of Spring.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

This is crazy!! We have 8 inches of snow (on the picnic table in the middle of the yard) and it's still coming down. My tomato's and their jars etc are completely covered. I probably just lost $15 but, it's kinda worth it to see something like this.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Wow!! Incredible!!! the weather is really wacky this year.

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

lol - Maybe yall can go out and build snow tomatoes...

It's actually sunny down here - with the wind, somehow we went from flood warnings yesterday, to wildfire warnings today...

East of Nacogdoches, TX(Zone 8a)

We just had 15 mins of light flurries. Covered the chard, spinach and kale with mulch, although they did just fine earlier in the season w/o any protection, once I got tired of doing it. They are in a box and banked on all sides with mulch.

Arlington, TX

We still have a little snow around and its windy but nothing like 8 inches! That is incredible.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Why did I choice this year to start selling veggie starts? Last year I put some tomato plants out in pots in the middle of Jan. and only had to cover them to keep them alive.
This year people want the plants by Easter Weekend, which would normally be fine, but I can't even harden them off. CRAZY

Caddo Mills, TX(Zone 8a)

I don't think that we got 8 inches probably about half of that, still sucks tho.

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

I am just hoping I get some Peaches and Blueberries this year.

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

You guys really got slammed this go 'round. We hardly got anything; just a very light dusting. Everything's already melted here.

Wells, TX(Zone 8b)

nac got some but Im about 15 miles from them and I got nothing but wind and rain..go figure.. I should have know this would happen.. I just bought some pepper plants to set out and this hit.. Im glad I didnt get them in the ground..maybe by mid week..

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

sweezel,
Don't mean to be a buttinsky but be careful with those mason jars. A bright sunny day will fry your babies.
Been there-done that :(

POTTSBORO, TX(Zone 7b)

I know it is very hard to resist in early spring but in general if one plants tomatoes in really cool weather the plant never really produces well. To satisfy our "spring fever" urge go ahead and plant some but plant some more about a month or two later.
Regards.

McKinney, TX(Zone 8a)

Yeah, I planted 2 early last year and they went through a frost covered and then got attacked by a fungus or insect soon after. I am sure it weakened them. I just don't learn my lesson though. :-) It's hard to resist buying when the nurseries are being filled with a good selection.

Yeah, it's a fine line between warming up a little under that glass and frying them. I was thinking that I would uncover them for a while soon after the sun actually came out, but that is not happening. They looked good when I cleaned the snow off of the jars this morning, but I don't know if they can make it through now, without any fresh air all today and into tomorrow morning.

Grapevine, TX(Zone 8a)

No more snow in the yard, but now weather.com is predicting 28 degrees tonight. I repeat - argh!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I just checked the 7-day forecast at the National Weather Service site and they are predicting 32º here. I agree--argh!

Rowlett, TX(Zone 8a)

Had 4-6" in Rowlett. One thing this cold and lengthy winter has done is force me to be patient. I haven't allowed myself to go to any nurseries or buy/plant anything yet. But now I am SOOOO ready for Spring!! :-)
