I dug up some thin leaved Iris 2 years ago out of an old garden that was going to be bulldozed.I dug up it in late june ...it was one of those get it now or not at all kind of things...it was obvious it hadnt bloomed in a while cause it was overgrown..I planted it like I did my bearded Iris and have not gotten any blooms yet but Im hopefull I will this year..someone told me they bloomed on the 2nd years growth... my question is how do I ID it without blooms??.. I dont know what kind it is... if its an LA iris or some other kind.. can anyone give me a crash couse in Iris identication???

Hard to ID from foliage but it is probably the common one. Older folks call it a ditch iris or swamp iris. It will spread so contain it or plant it where you want coverage. This is the one I've got. It has tall, spiky, blue grey foliage, look forward to seeing your blooms!

I have some named Louisiana iris, but I can't tell which ones they are just by looking at the foliage.
You will probably have to wait for the bloom in order to tell.
thanks everyone.. it has spread from when I planted it but not a lot ... Podster your pics showed it blooming in early april so hope fully Ill have some then..Illtake some pics.. Ive got it in an area with some bearded iris that are blooming now so hopefully my unknown will bloom a little later.. I dug it up cause I was getting my gardens going and it was FREE!!!...lol.. at that time I didnt care what it was..lol..
Louisiana iris are beautiful, just as lovely as the bearded ones.
up north we called bearder Iris Flags but here that what cannas are called...lol.. I have bearded, dutch and siberian irs along with my unknown.. the siberian are just coming up, their little leaves are barely peaking above the water right now.. Ill probably divide them after they bloom this year.. they have been in the same pot for 3 yrs now so its time...
okay poster Ive got blooms on my unknown.. whooo hooo!!! I know its probably just the ditch La but Im excited none the less.. I have pics in a few days
