I saw this hawk right near my house last winter and keep waffling on what I think it is--cooper's hawk, red tailed, something else? I know they can sometimes be hard to pin down exactly...anyone have a confident answer?
CLOSED: Help identify this hawk
Either Cooper's or Sharp-shinned; not enough detail to tell which for certain there.

Yeah that's what I was figuring. Besides the differences in the tail that you mentioned in other similar posts, are there any other distinguishing characteristics between the Cooper's and Sharp-shinned that you know of?
The new pic shows it has fairly stout legs, which means Cooper's. Sharp-shinned has thin ('sharp') legs.

Good to know. Thanks for the help!
