I want to start selling produce at the farmers market in the future, and am trying to think up names for my farm... We are a homestead first, and would just sell off our surplus for a bit of extra income. so the products would vary widely. fruit and veggies, honey, maple syrup, eggs, herbs, cut flowers... I'm really at a loss for a name. Any one have any thoughts or tips?
Help me name my hobby farm
My kids suggested Bat Hallow. I love the sound of it, love bats and we certainly have tons of them around...Does it sound too Halloweenish? I'm also not so sure people want to think about bats when they're buying food.
Tell us afew things about your place. Many trees? What kinds? Does the wind blow much. Do you have any bodies of water on your place? Those kinds of things.
Some people use a description of their property, some come up with a word that goes with a flower name, maybe a family member name, description of their gardening methods. You could always look for names on a map for ideas. Some of the little bitty towns have cool names. You might check out localharvest.com and enter farms or csa in the search and a State name. That will give you lots of names to look at, that might inspire you. Just be sure to write your ideas down. Sometimes one word from two different ideas will pop out at you and may be a perfect name.
We named our farm "Rebel Ridge" because we are on top of a hill and DH has always been a bit of a rebel. My CSA is called Ms Robin's Garden. A friend named her place "Sunflower Solace". Other names which I like the sound of are Possum Hollow and Periwinkle Point.
Come up with some words you like and we'll help you brainstorm.
lets see...large trees along the property lines and field divisions, + a few scattered on the property. Mostly maple, some shag bark hickory, a few oaks. There is an old orchard that we are restoring, lots of patches of lilac. our house is stone built in 1830 by Scottish immigrants, It's one of only 3 houses in that style on our road, the 2 others were built at the same time, by the same family...here is a picture to help you all visualize :-) View from the road:
what about twin maples farms? Or Lilac grove? Or perhaps something that has to do with its history? or Stone Hollow? or limestone something or other....I think Bat Hollow is still my favorite, LOL!
I love all 3 of those ideas, but Stone Hollow Farm is my favorite.
I like Stone Hollow Farm too.
Watch out for the wording. We are “Paisley Pumpkin Farms Nursery” we wanted sixtish and got it. Only problem is everyone thinks we raise pumpkins. We do most everything except pumpkins. Your new name may mean one thing to you and something very different to someone else.
Couldn't have people thinking you grow stones. LOL Sorry, couldn't resist.
Stone Hollow Farm wouldn't give any pre-conceived notions of what you are selling, so you could add any products to your sales list. Could also collect rocks from your property and do some garden art, like lady bugs, bees, etc. :)
Our idea was to dress up the jam and jelly jars with a piece of paisley material in pumpkin colors. Idea was great; making it work was the problem. Lol Only good thing about the name is that most people do remember it.
But I do like the Stone Hollow Farm also.
Hate when a great idea goes astray. :) So did you ever think about raising pumpkins for sale?
Yes but if we did people would just want watermelon. LOL Just can't please everyone now a days.
LOL! I know how that is. Daily occurance with my DH.
What exactly are you wanting your name to do?
Do you want a name people will remember?
One that describes your merchandise?
Maybe a name that will initiate a conversation?
I think it would depend on what you are looking for.
An example would be... we were new in our community when DH started his business. He chose to put the city name in it as posessive ~ we are theirs and they belong to us. It worked toward being accepted in a small, closed community.
OTOH, a friend gave theirs a peculiar name. They had the traffic but wanted to strike up a conversation with their customer base and an unusual name would make people ask what it meant?
Of course, as you will be at a farmers market, you will have the customer base so don't need a descriptive name.
Bat Hallow in the U.S. would probably be called Bat Hollow. If your children are working with you perhaps you should go with their input to build their pride in the business. I don't think people would consider that a ghoulish name. After all, bats have their place in natures' ecology for they eat a phenominal amount of bugs.

There's our voice of reason stepping in! :) Podster, love the explanations of how a name can work for you.
Batflower, you have a beautiful property.
Thank you msrobin :-) Podster, the "a" in hollow was a typo.
We are thinking of going with Stone Hollow. everyone here likes it, and our area is know as limestone city. Many, many businesses have limestone in their names. We were thinking that by going with Stone, we are including ourselves in the limestone community, but still being a bit different. My only concern is that there seems to be a few other Stone Hollow farms if you google it, and our costumers might have a hard time finding us online. So a more unusual name might be better?
People will sort it out on google themselves. There is a nursery in Paisley Scotland that we get confused with now and then and have met some wonderful Scots from there. LOL Each word in the name will come back as a hit. About 80% of our web traffic is from direct bookmarks. So don’t worry about the name and google
I like the sound of Batflower Farm!
Being from Kingston ~ perhaps Ston Hollow...
Hmmm, how about Scots Hollow Farm? I did a Google search and didn't find that one. A nod to the heritage of the area. I thought of ScotStone Hollow Farm, but that seemed a mouthful even just to say...LOL! But I have to agree, I too, like Stone Hollow Farm.
How about "Stone Throw Farms" then use a tag line something like "Lime Stone's #1 Fresh Produce".
Now that I like!
That was great Lizard - I think that one is a keeper. Of course, it's not my farm...LOL!
Thank you ....... thank you very much.
Thanks for all the advice, everyone :-) We've decided to go with Stone Hollow Farms
We christen thee ... Stone Hollow Farms!
That's a great one. They will think of you when they see a stone house or a big rock! LOL
I got the blogspot name any way...now my farm has a blog :-) Its a start.
Are you registered on Local Harvest? It's a pretty popular search site for people looking for local food.
