Wheelchairs for dogs

Manning, SC(Zone 8a)

I volunteer at a shelter here in SC (low kill; we only euthanize in cases of extreme aggression or sickness). We have a lovely little puppy, Maddie, who came to the shelter with her mama and 7 siblings, shortly after they were born in October of 2009. Maddie was the runt, but was as lively and happy as her brothers and sisters, though we noticed early on that she didn't have complete control over her back legs. It got more noticeable as time went on, and we had her checked out by a vet in December, who noticed in an X-ray some bruising to her spinal column. Meanwhile, all of her siblings were adopted quickly, and Maddie was paired with another puppy and they get along perfectly. Maddie runs and plays and is totally joyful. We had her checked by another vet last week who told us that because her problem is neurological, surgery likely wouldn't do her any good, and he advised exercise, which she loves. We are looking into possibly fitting her with a wheelchair device. We would have to do some fundraising to finance it (we're a small shelter, dependent on our membership and donations), but first I'd like to hear of other folks' experience with dogs needing mobility help. Suggestions and ideas would be so appreciated!!! We adore this little girl.....
