I went to Brazos Bend State Park a few weeks ago and these were just coming up. New growth was a beautiful reddish color. I visited the park again last weekend and they were already big and blooming! Discovered that some were small trees. Others were coming up from the ground. Please tell me what this is. I'm absolutely in love with it.
What native plant is this?
I believe that is Red Buckeye...and yeah, it's SO pretty when blooming!

Thanks! Wow, I read more about it and it can get to 40' high and 35' wide. Guess I won't be planting it in the backyard. Also likes it wet. I should've realized that b/c it was all flooded around Brazos Bend. Darn it. Well, I'll enjoy it in the forest. Thanks again.
I haven't seen any that are more than large shrub size...but then again, maybe I just haven't gone to the habitats where it reaches its full potential! Hmmm...that's a large tree size where I live!
They grow all around us here in NE Texas and the biggest one I have ever seen is about 15' tall. Most do good to get 6' or 8'. I dug two of them up this week so I could plant Blackberries and was surprised to see such a huge root on a small shrub. They like lots of water but if it goes real dry they just loose all their leaves and wait until next Spring. They really are a beautiful plant.
Most of the ones in the forest were 6-8'. That must be the norm. How long do they bloom?
