This is the first bloom on Karoline, a JT Sessions (gone2seed) cultivar. Sometimes, they do strange things. This bloom has 6 points instead of 5. I love the coral pink color.
Karoline Bloom
That is lovely. I too order from JT I just got Raphael
It is a nice color very nice thanks for sharing!
Betty are environmental stresses the cause for the strange blossoms one occasionally sees?
Envionmental stress is but one of the things that can cause strange blooms. Others are chemical, mechanical or pest damages. JT (gone2seed) also mentioned that double Brugs are in a sense considered aberrations. If the aberration (double) is stable it will produce only doubles most of the time. Some doubles are not very stable and can produce single often. Sometimes several stresses combine to produce strange flowers.
Rosalla, a hybrid by Anne Kirchner-Abel, is listed in the Brug Register as a single. This hybridizer never lists the parents of her registered Brugs, but I suspect that Rosalla might have a double in its ancestry. She blooms as a single for some people and as a double for others, but no one has figured out what causes that.
In Karoline's case, the most likely cause is environmental. The temperatures in the greenhouse have been rather extreme for the last month. I would have to toss in a bit of chemical stress as well. There is a slight propane leak at times when the "O" ring gets damaged.
Thanks, Betty.
I go in the Aussie site now and then they get 6 pointers all the time. I figured it was the fertilizer they give and maybe not?
My Rosalla is still too small. Maybe by the end of the season, I'll get to see whether I get singles or doubles out of her.
Dana, Jacayna is the only one I know of that consistantly produces 6 pointers here in the USA. Are the Australian 6 pointers just odd - every-once-in-a-while flowers or is that the norm for those particular varieties?
I hop in there now and then they seem to show quite a few all there plants look great! But I did notice quite a few 6 pointers they are super gardeners there gardens are awesome! That single flowers still on there I think it was labeled wrong looks more like daybreak to me :) not wild and crazy it happens
