Plant Suggestions...for a really tough area...

Houston, TX(Zone 8b)

Hello,

I have a west facing fence with a 25 foot Crape Myrtle planted against it. I need some suggestions for some understory plants (3-4 feet tall and wide are the dimensions I am looking for). This is a tough place to plant, namely because underneath the tree gets shade all day until about 2 and then gets sun for the rest of the day. I am looking for something that will attract butterflies, bees, and/or hummingbirds optimally, but with this challenging spot I am stumped as to what to plant. Any ideas? I hope some of you seasoned gardening enthusiasts can come up w/ some suggestions that will help me out. I have a variegated Ginger planted right beside it (tho it does tend to have it's leaves curled up in the late day, hot summer sun)!!

Thanks all for your suggestions.

Fulva daylillies, salvias such as madrensis, buchannanii, and yes, absolutely lantana horrida...

Big Sandy, TX(Zone 8a)

Hedychium and Curcuma Gingers and Brugmansias, not much on Butterflys but it will put on a show.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Plumbago, daylilies, crinum, hummingbird bush, abelia, finge flower, cosmos, and coreopsis would all work. These will all take the afternoon sun and be easy care.

Thank you all. I guess it's not such a tough spot after all. Wow!!! I really appreciate the feedback. I am familiar with many of these. I will look them up and see where I land.
