I have made teepee supports this year with new 6' bamboo canes. Will my Pole Beans be able to climb them, or should I wind some twine around them? There are 6 canes in each teepee.
Will my Pole Beans climb new Bamboo poles?
It seems like my vines need me to point the way for the first foot or so, then they usually climb on their own.
My pole beans climbed like crazy last year on bamboo teepees...i didn't help them at all...
I had four teepees total -- and I ended up putting a "bridge" between two of them -- so it was more like teepee - cross poles - teepee then teepee - cross poles - teepee.
The cross poles were really just to help stability of the teepees (and I tied the cross poles to the teepees all together at every joint). I don't have a good picture... sorry.
The beans were so prolific, I ended up needing a ladder to harvest... the bamboo was about 6 feet, and the beans could have gone 2-3 feet higher...
If I had it to do over again, I would make the poles shorter for ease of harvest. Good luck!
I would say that beans will climb just about anything however you may want to tie some of the vine to help it along..then once established you can remove the tie. That's what I've done.. & since it's been especially windy here lately it has helped a lot, as it keeps the small seedlings from breaking in half.
