blooming early March, southern California
Ice Plant, Coppery Mesemb (Malephora crocea)
While the plant pictured is in the Malephora genus, the species is probably 'lutea', rather than 'crocea'. Crocea all have violet undersides of their petals. Lutea has yellow top & bottom petals. (I have red, copper, & violet top-petal flowers growing on my 3 Malephora croceas . . . each which have violet undersides to their petals . . . and also Malephora lutea with totally-yellow colored petals on its flowers).
