Exchequer Leghorn Chicks

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I just hatched my first Exchequer Leghorn chick today. I don't remember seeing pics posted of that breed before, so I thought I'd post some pictures. I have 11 that I hope will hatch. Here is the first one out.

I've never heard of them. Tell us more.

They end up looking rather like speckled sussex birds. They were introduced through some random mutations in a flock in Scotland apparently, in the early 1900s. They are supposed to be early and prolific layers of white eggs.

and some pictures...of the adult birds.

That was only the first chick, but now I have 5, and 5 pips. Nice hatch rate! Will take more pics later when everybody is dried off!

We anxiously await...

8 hatched, 2 to go. Some have more black on their backs than others. Here are some quick shots taken in the hatcher*.

*Note - don't do this if you have a Styrofoam hatcher - leave the lid on until all are hatched. I only take the lid off for a short time, but this is an automatic hatcher and the temp and humidity go back up within a couple of minutes of opening. That doesn't happen with a styro.

They come from Scotland!

It says they showed up as a sport....I wonder what the genetics of it are?

The down pattern looks quite a bit like the mottled Java's.

Aww, cute. Bigger is better in wattles & combs? They're big chicks, amazing how they fit in the egg for as long as they do.

I love em! In that last pic, look at that one on the right... it's lil comb is kinda laying over from being in the egg.. I've only seen that a few times and I love it!
Like when a foal is born, it's whiskers are all swept to the side.. just the cutest thing!

Yes, I often find that a folded over comb is an early sign of a roo, but ALL of these little chicks have it. I think because even the leghorn pullets have large combs, it's not a determining factor here. I hope not anyway!! All 10 hatched, cute little things!

How cute is that!!?? I love seeing that.. I don't know why.. Just think it's so cute.

Congratulations on a perfect hatch! You rock!
