Can anyone help I.D.? (Part 1)

Hanford, CA

My parents' home in Idaho burned down last year and when we went up to poke around the charred ruins last September, there were what I thought were Autumn crocus flowers blooming from the ashes. We dug them up and brought them to California. I put them in a planter over the winter - they actually sustained their blooms thru the trip and after planting, with a few more coming up. No foliage, just flowers. They finally died back and I pulled the blooms from the pot and left the bulbs to overwinter there...

I believe they are autumn crocus-- why do you doubt this?

It's a colchicum (which are admittedly often called "autumn crocus"). However colchicums aren't crocuses; they're in the lily family and can be differentiated by having five stamens (as shown in your picture) whereas all crocuses have three.

Well done for rescuing them! They are lovely.
