This spring, when green started showing, I was thrilled. Except now that the plants are up, it's pretty obvious that they are NOT crocus! If I hadn't seen the bulbs I potted actually flowering, I would think I had dug up some other bulb right next to the crocus... Does anyone recognize the foliage? (Hope this two-part posting works; couldn't figure a way to get 2 pics in one post.)
Can anyone help I.D.? (Part 2)
I still think they are autumn crocus. That is just what they do-- growing foliage in the spring, leaves die off in summer or fall (can't remember which), then flowers pop up without foliage in the fall. You have a beautiful specimen!
Oh - thanks! I swear I researched before posting; pics I found searching for "Autumn crocus foliage" showed very thin, strappy and grass-like leaves. So when I saw your post I searched again and voila - there it was, a whole field of this very same foliage. Sorry 'bout that, and thanks again.
"Autumn crocus" = Colchicum spp., in this case, rather than Crocus spp.... more common name confusion.
(NB. Note though that there are fall-blooming Crocus spp. and also spring-blooming Colchicum spp., just to make the common names even more confusing.)
