I was just wondering if anyone has these?? I planted them from seed last year and I'm hoping they come back.. The plant files say 6a, I'm 6b so i'm hoping i'm ok... My question to anyone that has these or knows about them are they like other hardy hibiscus and there really late to come up?? Or do they start in the spring??

texas red star hibiscus
This seems very early in your season still, I wouldn't worry if you haven't seen them yet. I don't know if they're as slow as H. moscheutos or not, but even if they're a bit faster than it this seems too early to worry.
no no its way to early, we finally just had all the snow melt lol.. Just trying to plan out my garden and dont know if I should wait to see if the grow or move them and hope for the best.. Were raising the garden and everything i want to keep needs to be dug out.. I wouldn't want to waste my time if there dead.. I think i have 50 seedlings from last year planted there (its my seed starting garden) I guess i could pot them all up before i put them in there new location just to see until new growth starts..

It's too early for them to come up where you are, but I'm pretty darn sure they're hardy where you are. They don't start coming back for me until into late April.

Oh yes i know its too early.. We plan to redo that garden in may, so if theres no life on them yet I will just pot them till I see growth..
I do hope they come back, I planted them in part shade and never did get a flower.. they were only about a foot and a half high.. I would love to see one of them make it to bloom this year.. I will be moving them to full sun once I see signs of life... I only have two luna hibiscus planted in my yard right now, and from what i have heard these texas stars are just breathtaking.. Hopefully i get to see one...
Hey Smurf - well - ours are in Baton Rouge, 8B but they are about 10 inches tall right now...seem to be coming back fine after our record breaking cold this winter...
Our Hardy's are coming back as well....and my tropicals are just now sprouting a leaf or two ... (except for one)
Here's a pic from last year with DH...

I started some from seed late Feb outside in winter sow jugs and they're about 6 inches tall now. Strange though because the leaves look like hib moscheutos vs. my other texas star. Is that normal for new texas star seedlings?
I remember it wasn't till later in the season (or as they got taller) That the leaves had the marijuana leaf type look.. I dont remember what they looked like at first but i remember thinking that was nothing like what i thought i planted.. I think your ok

My one from last year has the wacky weed leaves but these are new seedlings so who knows.
Not sure if I'm going to start new ones this year, all the ones from last year didn't make it through my winter.. I pulled one out the other day and the root was molding, so i pulled a few more and all was the same so they dont last the zone 6b's weather that I have..

I actually kept mine from last year in a large bin of water in my greenhouse, and it came back a hellin' this spring. But I had it in the pond last summer so it was used to being "waterlogged" already. It does well in water though.
Sorry to hear yours didn't make it through the winter. They really are quite beautiful.
I'm in zone 8a and mine didn't last through our decidedly frigid winter this year either...
Dee
mine survived the cold weather, and with no mulch
Hello All - Ours made it through as well... well...died back but doing quite well now... and DH 'moved' it too.... so it's a trooper... it's about 3 1/2 feet tall now....but got about 7 feet tall last year...
Sorry for those who lost their's! I lost a hibby (tropical) and still sad.
Hugs,
Mary
